Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book by a doctor who spent many years in the French colony of Saint Domingue reveals the severe effects of various illnesses on enslaved Africans. The author argues that several chronic maladies such as scurvy, dropsy, and ulcers, as well as a rapid aging process, were brought on by the poor conditions endured by enslaved Africans, from malnutrition to overwork, all of which weakened their immune systems and made them vulnerable to disease. This book offers a rare glimpse into the lives of enslaved Africans and the medical challenges they faced in the 18th century. It sheds light on the ways in which the brutality of the slave trade and the harsh conditions of plantation life took a physical and psychological toll on enslaved Africans. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
