Cloth. Condición: Near Fine. A fantastic group of four pieces of publishing ephemera, all related to the promotion and sale of the first complete set of Willa Cather's works, while she was still alive and active but virtually all of her major works had been published. The most charismatic piece of the group is a dummy book of "O Pioneers!", which was to be the first volume of the 13 volume set. Besides this "book", the package of promotional materials includes the prospectus, a booklet of which we have two copies, and a cover letter for this.which resembles a formal invitation printed on a double folded sheet, similar to a formal invitation to a wedding or other event. The prospectus, in addition to listing the components of the set, provides biographies of Cather and of Bruce Rogers, the designer of the set. The dummy volume of "O Pioneers" is 8vo., 23 by 16 cm, cream cloth on the spine, blue cloth on the boards, with a stylized Cather monogram impressed as a centerpiece on the front and rear cover. It replicated how the novel will appear in the actual set up to the sixth page of the novel, after which the volume is filled with blank sheets -- we haven't counted the blanks, but the volume looks like a 250 page to conform with how the volume will look when the full novel is contained within. So the dummy includes in the front the title page for the set (which will be in each of the volumes), the verso of which has the limitation page, a frontis engraved portrait of Cather, the title page, the copyright page, the dedication page, a poem, a Contents page, and finally the beginning of the first chapter, "The Wild Land". The cover letter for the Prospectus, when opened, is 21.5 by 17 cm. The Prospectus itself is eight leaves, including its cover, and its size paper is the same as that of the dummy volume. Its pagination doesn't relate to itself but to the extracts from the set. It includes a facsimile of the title page for "The Song of the Lark" and also a facsimile of an one page Cather manuscript. Cather lived another decade, until 1947, after the publication of this prestigious set of her works. She was still to publish "Sapphire and the Slave Girl", which came out in 1940, but as we already indicated, her most famous and beloved works are in this set. Condition-wise, the dummy volume ha light edgewear, with a touch of fraying by the spine tips. One of our two Prospectuses is in Fine condition, the other, a modicum of foxing and other soiling on its cover.

Hardcover. Thomas W. Nason Ilustrador. Signed limited edition. This is a fine, unread, two-volume 1950 Limited Editions Club issue of Robert Frost's Complete Poems. Under the direction of celebrated American typographer and book designer Bruce Rogers, fifteen hundred numbered copies were produced. The edition was illustrated with wood engravings by Thomas W. Nason. The Volume II colophon is hand-numbered and signed by Frost, Nason, and Rogers all. This set, numbered "816", is in fine condition, immaculately clean inside and out and unread, with uncut signatures throughout. It is housed in the original marbled paper-covered slipcase, which has done its job protecting the lovely books within and is in very good condition, intact, though with superficial scuffs and wear and partial splits around the slipcase opening. This set is accompanied by the publisher's extensive, illuminating, four-page July 1950 "Monthly Letter" explaining in detail the "luncheon-breakfast" at which Frost was awarded The Limited Editions Club's Gold Medal for the 1949 edition of his Collected Poems (Crane A35), said award and edition being the genesis of this limited edition. For the edition, "Nason made his exquisite wood-engravings on a small scale, so that they could decorate the half-titles into which Frost's Complete Poems are divided." With the exacting aesthetic attention for which he is justly famed, Bruce Rogers "selected for the setting of the lines that simple and homespun type which is called Scotch" and "specified a comparatively coarse rag paper" as the "proper background" for the type. Printing was done by the Marchbanks Press and the binding was done in blue denim "just such a material as the poet must have worn during his years on the farms of New Hampshire and Vermont." The leather spine label of each volume is stamped in gold leaf.The text is from the preceding 1949 edition of Frost's Collected Poems issued by his lifelong American publisher, Henry Holt the edition that won Frost the Limited Edition's Club recognition and prompted publication of this limited edition. "In addition to RF's introduction, 'The Figure a Poem Makes' (printed first in Collected Poems, 1939), this collection contains everything included in the 1930 and 1939 collections as well as all the poems from Steeple Bush (1947), the texts of A Masque of Reason and A Masque of Mercy, and three poems previously printed elsewhere: 'Choose Something Like a Star' (printed first in Come In, 1943), 'Closed for Good' (the 1948 Christmas poem), and 'From Plane to Plane' (printed first in What's New, 1948).According to his publisher, when Frost was reminded that his collected poems "was a volume of some six hundred pages and represented sixty years of writing" he said "That means I've been writing less than ten pages a year. It's discouraging." Full leather. First and Limited Edition. This is a particularly compelling copy of one of the twentieth century's most compelling books. This copy is not only still housed in its original slipcase and accompanied by the original publisher's prospectus, but also inscribed by the printer, Sir Emery Walker, to musical prodigy and decidedly unconventional prominent cultural figure Violet Gordon Woodhouse. The inscription is inked in six lines in Walker's unsteady hand on the upper right recto of the blank preceding the title page: "to Violet Gordon Woodhouse | from her affectionate friend | Emery Walker; for her birth-Day | April 23.1933; and in remem- | brance of April 14." Violet was turning 62 years old. Emery, already 82, would not see another birthday; he inscribed this book just three months before his death.The book approaches near fine condition. The binding is square, clean and unfaded, with sharp corners. Minor scuffs are primarily confined to the hinge extremities and corners. The contents are lovely, clean and bright with no spotting or soiling. We note only perimeter browning to the endpapers from contact with the turn-ins. The gilt top edge remains bright except for some dulling immediately adjacent to the spine. The untrimmed fore and bottom edges look immaculate.Laid in is the original publisher's prospectus, an elusive and collectible item on its own. The prospectus is clean and complete, with a single horizontal fold. The publisher's original slipcase, in plain black paper-covered card, is intact, though significantly scuffed. The book was purchased a quarter of a century ago from the venerable London firm of Maggs Bros. Ltd. and we will include their sales receipt.In 1932, T. E. Lawrence "of Arabia" (1888-1935) published a translation of Homer's The Odyssey designed by celebrated American typographer and book designer Bruce Rogers (1870-1957). Lawrence's & Rogers's Odyssey was a masterpiece, an aesthetically magnificent book and a highly regarded translation. Distinguished printing historian and fine-press printer Joseph Blumenthal said "I believe that the Bruce Rogers Odyssey is indisputably among the most beautiful books ever produced."Rogers designed the book and Lawrence provided the translation. It owes its physical existence to the printer, Sir Emery Walker (1851-1933). "Emery Walker, friend of William Morris and co-proprietor of the Doves Press, had been one of the outstanding printers of the private press movement. Now in his last years, he continued to help Wilfred Merton, his successor at Emery Walker Ltd, until his health failed. The Bruce Rogers Odyssey was his final major achievement, and by no means the least."Rogers and Lawrence sought Walker intentionally, with a clear sense of both the significance of their collaboration and the suitability of Walker's participation. On 3 September 1928, the project still nascent, Rogers wrote to Lawrence: "Walker is now over 75 (though almost as vigorous as ever) and it would be a great pleasure to him to have his name on one more important book, before he stops printing for good and in my eyes this will be the most important"In 1888, the year of Lawrence's birth, it was Walker who inspired William Morris to found the Kelmscott Press. Morris in turn had inspired both Lawrence and Bruce Rogers to become interested in fine printing. In a sense, their magnificent 1932 Odyssey brought the story full circle.The association of Walker with the singular personality to whom he inscribed this book is less clear, and perhaps all the more interesting as a result. Violet Kate Eglinton Gordon Woodhouse (1871-1948) was a prodigy keyboardist, known for her unconventional personal life, and for the cultural luminaries who visited her music salon. Originally a phenom pianist, Violet also became a foremost clavichord player and harpsichordist. In the words of her Times obituary, "the subtlety of her playing was infinite when she began to play, one became entangled in a golden web of purest sound." Violet's "golden web" extended to men; she "lived with four 'husbands' only one of whom was her legal spouse." From 1903, Violet and her four men "lived quite openly together until, one by one, death separated them." She had many non-spousal devotees as well. "Among the admiring visitors to her salon were Lawrence of Arabia, T. S. Eliot, Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, Pablo Picasso, Serge Diaghilev, Auguste Rodin, and the cream of Europe's musicians." Housed in a custom green cloth chemise which itself is housed in a custom quarter dark-blue morocco slipcase with five raised bands, green cloth sides, and gilt spine title. The rarest of Bruce Rogers's books, this work contains the first appearance of his Centaur type in a book. "The Centaur type is an original design of rare cultivation and grace. The Centaur is a book of typographic eloquence of forthright, dramatic simplicity" (Blumenthal, Bruce Rogers, p. 33). The typesetting and presswork are near perfection (see Kelly and Beletsky, The Noblest Roman, p. 39). Rogers also drew the headpiece and initial letter, in a manner suggestive of Tory/Estienne. One of only 135 copies (100 for sale per the colophon; in actuality, only about 60 were for sale, the rest were given away; see ibid., p. 40); printed on dampened handmade Batchelor paper at Carl Purington Rollins's Montague Press, with the wry errata slip tipped in. This copy bears the signed bookplate of Jean Hersholt, the Danish actor, philanthropist and noted Hans Christian Andersen collector and translator, who is perhaps better known for the eponymous Humanitarian Award periodically bestowed at the Oscars ceremonies. Hersholt's shelf label is on the inside of the right-side chemise panel. A near fine, well-preserved copy of this fragile book, with the usual light foxing (here on the title page margin) and small light bump at the spine ends. On the dustjacket, some offsetting from the chemise, minor edgewear and a few dampstains on rear dustjacket panel (leaving faint shadows on rear cover); slipcase lightly rubbed at the corners and edges.
