This is a meticulously researched and superbly detailed biography of composer Jules Massenet, a musical prodigy who entered the Paris Conservatory at the age of ten in 1853 and was at the heart of Parisian musical life until his death in 1912. During his lifetime Massenet was one of the best known and most highly regarded musicians in all Europe. Although his works fell out of vogue for several decades after his death, the 1970s and 80s brought a renewal of interest in his work and a welcome series of new performances. Relying on primary sources for firsthand information, Irvine profiles the composer and draws a rich portrait of the fascinating era in which Massenet lived. The narrative begins in 1748 with the birth of Massenet's grandfather, details the composer's early years and family life, traces his educational career, and highlights important events in his life. This carefully documented biography of Massenet and his milieu is lively and readable, conveying a vivid sense of the life of a successful musician in the late nineteenth century. Along the way one meets numerous composers, conductors, singers, publishers, artists, writers, and critics - everyone who contributed to the exciting cultural ferment of the time. Massenet's Paris was the city of expositions, a magnet for artistic talent and innovative ideas. As Massenet composed his first operas, Cezanne, Degas, Monet, Renoir, and their compatriots were unveiling the new Impressionism; Bizet, Faure, Wagner, Offenbach, Debussy, and Saint-Saens were his musical contemporaries. Great operatic performers such as Sibyl Sanderson, Emma Calve, Mary Garden, Geraldine Farrar, and Feodor Chaliapin were eager to star in the premier of anynew work by Massenet. The composer had many eminent students, including Gustave Charpentier, Lucien Hillemacher, and Reynaldo Hahn. In this period of extraordinary artistic vitality, Massenet was applauded by his arch-rival Saint-Saens as a 'sparkling diamond' of French music. Al MASSENET A CHRONICLE OF HIS LIFE AND TIMES.

Demar Irvine was a music historian, composer, and educator who earned his PhD in music aesthetics from Harvard University. He joined the faculty of the University of Washington School of Music in Seattle in 1937 and became professor emeritus in 1978. He died in 1995. His other publications include Methods of Research in Music and Writing About Music. Massenet: A Chronicle of His Life and Times was published by Amadeus Press and runs to 398 pages. It is the most comprehensive English-language biography of Jules Massenet (1842-1912), a composer who was, during his lifetime, one of the most celebrated and widely performed musicians in Europe, yet whose reputation suffered a long eclipse after his death before being substantially revived from the 1970s onward through new productions and recordings of his operas. The narrative begins not with Massenet's birth but with that of his grandfather in 1748, situating the composer within a family history before tracing his emergence as a musical prodigy. Massenet entered the Paris Conservatoire at the age of eleven, studied composition under Ambroise Thomas, and won the Prix de Rome in 1863, spending the customary period in Italy before returning to Paris to build one of the most formidable careers in French musical history. He eventually became a professor at the Conservatoire himself, where his students included Gustave Charpentier, Reynaldo Hahn, and Lucien Hillemacher. He was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts and became, for several decades, the dominant figure in French opera. Irvine draws heavily on primary sources ? letters, contemporary reviews, institutional records, and Massenet's own unreliable but entertaining memoir ? to build a detailed picture of both the man and his working environment. The Paris that Massenet inhabited was the city of the great expositions, a magnet for artistic energy of every kind. His operatic contemporaries included Bizet, Gounod, Offenbach, and Saint-Saëns; his world intersected with that of the Impressionist painters, whose early exhibitions coincided with his first operatic successes. Among the great singers who created roles in his works were Sibyl Sanderson, Emma Calvé, Mary Garden, Geraldine Farrar, and Feodor Chaliapin. The book covers the full arc of Massenet's output across some thirty operas, as well as his orchestral music, songs, piano works, and sacred compositions. Particular attention is paid to the works that have retained or recovered their place in the repertoire ? Manon, Werther, Thaïs, Hérodiade, Don Quichotte ? but Irvine does not neglect the lesser-known pieces, treating the complete output seriously and tracing the compositional and theatrical circumstances of each major work. The professional relationships with publishers, theatre directors, and conductors are documented with care, giving the book a useful institutional dimension that purely artistic biographies often lack. Irvine's portrait of Massenet the man is notably even-handed. Massenet was famously charming, strategically adept at managing his public reputation, and careful to protect his domestic life from scrutiny; Irvine treats these qualities with objectivity rather than either censure or hagiography. The book's subtitle ? A Chronicle ? is apt: Irvine is primarily a documentarian rather than an interpreter, and readers looking for sustained analytical engagement with the music itself may find the coverage of compositional style somewhat thinner than the biographical and professional record. Library Journal described it as an important contribution to music literature and highly recommended it for serious music collections. Reviewers noted that Irvine writes with scholarly ease, presenting intimate yet objective detail, and that the book conveys a vivid sense of what it meant to be a successful musician at the centre of Parisian cultural life in the late nineteenth century.
