B/w photographs and illustrations. Pictorial laminated boards, issued without a dust-wrapper. Fine new copy. "Farming is the single largest land-use in Europe. It accounted for nearly one-half of the total land area of the European Union and is consequently home to many common and widespread birds, as well as those adapted to particular agricultural landscapes. However, until relatively recently, the conservation importance of farmlands went unrecognized. Furthermore, much of the special value of farmlands has been lost or degraded as a result of the unprecedented rate of development of new and aggressive land management techniques. Many of the species of farmland birds are now in sharp decline, or threatened with total extinction, as a result of the sorts of agricultural intensification encouraged by the Common Agricultural Policy. Across the EU, wherever traditional low-intensity farming systems remain, nature conservation value also persists, although under increasing threat. Where intensification has been rapid much value has already been lost and wildlife of all kinds have suffered. Grassland conservation to crops, drainage and irrigation, chemical aplications, new crops and crop pattern changes, loss of marginal habitats and changes in stocking rates have all played their part. In addition, the concentration on areas of high production potential has often lead to the abandonment of less productive land where traditional low-intensity management was beneficial to wildlife. This book highlights all aspects of the problems associated with farming and bird conservation. Discussion ranges from the socio-political pressures on farm policy to the effects of management on a variety of bird species throughout the more and less developed parts of the European Union. Potential changes in the Common Agricultural Policy are considerd in terms of how they have been and can be tailored to benefit birds and wildlife through such initiatives as the new Agri-Environment Regulation. The text addresses the need for policy efforts to focus on both the concerns of conservation and sensible farm management. It stresses the importance in seeing that a conclusion is reached, both for the needs of the farmer and consumer and for the birds and wildlife of the European countryside." Chapters include:- Why farming and birds in Europe? by Deborah J. Pain and James Dixon; Europe's changing farmed landscapes by Clive Potter; The evolution of the Common Agricultural Policy and the incorporation of environmental considerations by Nigel Robson; Priorities for bird conservation in Europe - the importance of the farmed landscape by Graham Tucker; Extensive grazing and raptors in Spain by Jose A. Añadir al carritosecond edition).Large octavo, paperback,320 pp.,colour photographs, text illustrations, maps. Almost two hundred species of birds have become extinct in the past 400 years, and a similar number today are in imminent danger of following them. The world's conservationists are leading the fight to prevent the demise of these remaining critically endangered birds, with a fair degree of success. This new book examines the process and issues concerning extinction - how and why it happens and what can be done about it. Whilst man is to blame for many of the causes, such as persecution and habitat loss, species have become extinct on a regular basis since life began. After several thought-provoking introductory chapters, the book showcases about 20 species on the brink of extinction from around the world and describes the work that is being undertaken to save them. Some are success stories, but a few are not. This is a subject close to the hearts of all birders and ornithologists and this book, written by a team of leading conservationists, will strike a chord in most of them.

Añadir al carritoOctavo, paperback,352 pp.,text illustrations. The earth's biodversity is currently being lost at an unprecedented rate. Conservationists attempt to reduce these losses by protecting and restoring species and habitats: correct information is vital. Using examples from bird conservation, this book describes and discusses the scientific principles conservationists use, and shows how these principles are applied to real problems. Conserving Bird Biodiversity takes a âproblem'-based approach, differing from other volumes that discuss either general conservation principles or practical techniques. It will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners in conservation biology and wildlife management. Also available in hardcover.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Reliable information is the foundation upon which local, national and international conservation efforts are based, placing research at the heart of biodiversity conservation. The fundamental role of research is diverse and includes understanding the importance of biodiversity, defining 'units' of biodiversity, priority-setting for species and sites, managing endangered and declining populations, understanding large-scale processes, making predictions about the future, and interfacing with training, education, public awareness and policy initiatives. Using real examples, researchers consider the principles underlying these manifold issues and illustrate how these principles have been applied to address actual conservation problems. The earth's biodiversity currently faces an extinction crisis that is unprecedented. Conservationists attempt to intervene in the extinction process either locally by protecting or restoring important species and habitats, or at national and international levels by influencing key policies and promoting debate. Reliable information is the foundation upon which these efforts are based, which places research at the heart of biodiversity conservation. The role of research in such conservation is diverse. It includes understanding why biodiversity is important, defining 'units' of biodiversity, priority-setting for species and sites, managing endangered and declining populations, understanding large-scale processes, making predictions about the future and interfacing with training, education, public awareness and policy initiatives. Using examples from a wide range of bird conservation work worldwide, researchers consider the principles underlying these issues, and illustrate how these principles have been applied to address actual conservation problems for students, practitioners and researchers in conservation biology.
