By strict definition, voice is not a vital function - unlike a pumping heart, a respiring lung, or a functioning liver. Therefore, all efforts to surgically treat cancer of the larynx are simultaneously paralleled by efforts to afford acceptable voice rehabilitation. This concept dates back to the first total laryngectomy performed by Billroth in the 1870s and the subsequent efforts of Gussenbauer to restore voice.
