Bank Note And Other Stories, 260 pages plus 9 pages of ads in the rear of the book, corners bumped, right top corner of pages having been bent over at one time, page 130 and 131 with a couple of minor smudges otherwise book is pretty clean, tight, and complete. Story is about two Englishmen who had two "one million pound notes printed by the bank of England, the story centers around a dispute between the two brothers as to how an American would behave should he fall into possession of one of the notes, there are other stories appearing as well for the first time.

The book was originally titled A Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some early editions are titled A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur. In the book, a Yankee engineer from Connecticut named Hank Morgan receives a severe blow to the head and is somehow transported in time and space to England during the reign of King Arthur. After some initial confusion and his capture by one of Arthur's knights, Hank realizes that he is actually in the past, and he uses his knowledge to make people believe that he is a powerful magician. He becomes a rival of Merlin, who appears to be little more than a fraud, and gains the trust of King Arthur. Hank attempts to modernize the past in order to make people's lives better. Hank is disgusted by how the Barons treat the commoners, and tries to implement democratic reforms, but in the end he is unable to prevent the death of Arthur. Hank declares England a republic, but the Catholic Church - growing fearful of his power - issues an interdict against him. Twain wrote the book as a burlesque of Romantic notions of chivalry after being inspired by a dream in which he was a knight himself, severely inconvenienced by the weight and cumbersome nature of his armor. A superb copy with gleaming cover gilt, tight and unmarked except for a historic 1919 Asheville, North Carolina bookplate neatly tipped to the front endpaper. Twain wrote this novel with the help of phonographic dictation, likely the first author to do so. This was also an attempt to write a book without mention of the weather, the first of its kind in fictitious literature (although, of course, the first sentence of the second paragraph contains "fine, breezy morning"). Indeed, all the weather is contained in an appendix at the back of the book, which the reader is encouraged to reference from time to time. The story is a comedy of mistaken identities and multiple role switches. One rarely finds such a fine copy of this Twain work.
