Description: This is a companion volume to Robinson's Complete Arithmetic, and provides the solutions, showing the operations in an abbreviated form, for the more difficult of the written examples from that book. The preface explains that, as this key was prepared not for the pupil, but for the teacher or the private learner, the answers for the easier written examples and the oral questions have not been provided. BINDING/CONDITION: brown cloth with black text and decoration; marbled text edges; owner's name, and a few pencil markings, otherwise a Very Good book, no dust jacket. 12mo (about 7'' tall). 136 pages.

Inscription on front free endpaper dated 1956 signed Jane, perhaps that of the author. A fine copy in very good printed silver foil dust jacket with light wear at edges, several short closed tears, and two internal tape mends. (#119375).

Park House is probably the institution, located on Chicago's Near North Side, which was described as a ". combination Bohemian rooming house, YMCA and youth settlement house" and was named after University of Chicago Professor Robert E. Park. The University of Chicago has a Park House archive although it is unclear whether they have this uncommon item.

This scarce pamphlet contains two and a half pages of racist justification for white control and subjugation of African Americans followed by a collection of stereotype jokes, mostly lampooning African Americans -- toward the end the author throws in one or two generic, anti-Semitic and anti-Irish jokes. Woodcut frontispiece of a man and woman sitting at a table in a fashionable parlor, the man pointing to an open book on the table; the woodcut is signed "Devereux." 71 pages, tight, foxing throughout. The story of Ellen who was left orphaned at the age of eighteen, whose mother, on her deathbed, pleaded with her about the state of her soul. She becomes a sincere Christian, but marries a wealthy lawyer, who is not. The book is replete with her suffering in mind and soul over the temptations proffered to her through this "unscriptural marriage," and the fears that she has for her children, who are removed from her home after her husband's death; his brother had been made the executor of his will and the guardian of his children. The author has Ellen writing a letter at the end of the book, which concludes, "Oh! my friend, remember the poor sufferer who warns you; break the snare, and endure anything but the wretchedness of an unscriptural marriage. Sometimes pray for the affectionate, but broken-hearted Ellen R_____". A morality tale intended to warn against Christians uniting in marriage with an unbeliever.The engraver, Nicholson B. Devereux, was born in Massachusetts in 1813. He was a wood engraver with the Boston Bewick Co. (1834-1842); he later moved to Philadelphia (1849-1860). An unusual business publication, not exactly a trade catalogue in which a company is promoting its products, but rather, a company promoting its line of business, inviting others to enter the industry. Thus the brochure is a primer on how cast iron toys are made, step-by-step, along with more general information about the industry, and as a marketing tool, putting a positive spin on things. Like many catalogues, there are also testimonials. As to what was in it for the company, it was seeking ways to profit in a consulting and alliance capacity. Since a new entrant would be challenged to handle all the vertical stages between sourcing of materials to retailing, the Metal Cast Products Co. could take care of the step(s) beyond the new enterprise. 4to., 25 by 12 cm. 26 pp, counting front wraps as two pages, not including rear wraps. Illustrated with both b/w photographs and drawn illustrations. Only the front cover shows the cast toys in vignette illustrations. Scarce, with Henry Ford showing as the only institutional holding on the OCLC First Search database and none found in commerce on the date this description was prepared. The wraps have a touch of browning around their perimeter and insignificant soiling. Offsetting of mailing envelope addressed to issuer (Metal Products) onto the last page. The envelope is present. Generally, the brochure shows only light wear. Its condition is such one could almost think it was a reprint!

Sixth Edition. Long before the Forbes list, and perhaps a testament to the New York obsession with money and wealth. Also incredible how such information was in a sense to be gleaned from public records in a way not possible today. Listed are names still familiar along with many now obscure. Cornelius Vanderbilt is already very wealthy, with an assessed worth of $1.2 million, but that's a fraction of John Jacob Astor's $25 million, and or say the Estate of Stephen van Rensellaer, valued at a cool $10 million. Most of the fortunes are just six figures, but of course, the equivalent today of $100,000 would be easily many many millions. 8vo. 22.5 by 14.5 cm. 32 pp, not counting the wraps, which have substantive content on their internal sides. The box is considerably larger, being 29.5 by 20 cm, and about 4.5 cm thick. Besides protecting the fragile brochure, the box signals the book's scarcity and significance. The wraps have rough edges, with a good amount of soiling, but they are fully intact.
