The pamphlet is near-FINEthe glassine dustjacket (made of about the flimsiest dj material on Eart…h) is a little tatty and torn here and there. And is at best Fair/Good. It does however have the title of the work imprinted in gold on it. There is no indication of the printer or place of publication though I suspect the whole thing was done by Chris-Craft, given the placement of its ads and their frequency. Surprisingly I can find NO copies of this in WorldCat.

GOOD copy. Provenance: Library of Congress, with their rubber stamp inside front cover with a penciled note stating the date of receipt ("My 29 1942). This s…eems as though it was a handout and should be relatively easy to find it is not. Somehow there are no copies in WorldCat, and lots of other places. I dunno. [++] Wonderful publication.[++] Nothing quite exceeds like excess said Mr. Wilde (and others) , and he/they could be no more correct when looking at this picture of a Movable Maginot Line [see the FIFTH PIC] it is a mobile fort, complete with plane launching capacity, two dozen long canons, a crane, and a host of other stuff. [++]It looks as though it has ample room for all sorts of materiel though leaving little room for, perhaps, an engine. I just can t see where it might beperhaps it is near the not-room-enough-for-it-either ammunition compartment. Maybe they were in a smaller armed cart being pulled by the mothership? I reckon that this beast was 66 feet high, 100 feet long and 60 feet wide, which is a very big, heavy near-cube. Good luck with driving the thing in any-thing that was less than perfect conditions. A big profile like this, filled with guns and canons or not, also makes for a big target profile a tall, broad target with flat/non-inclined sides. ( I should also point out that there are two 10 loudspeakers mounted on the front of the fort to instill fear in the people that the thing was approaching with loud noise. The author points out that the Nazis used noise against the French with their screaming dive bombers , and so the fort would use the same tactics against the Nazis in the movable fort not that the sound of the engines and the attendant noise wouldn t ve been enough of a fear factor in themselves) [++] But the image of such a monster, sensical or not, was enough for the purposes of the pamphlet in which it appeared. The Brains to Win was a piece of British spirit/hope propaganda issued at about the time of the Battle of Britain in 1940, and it listed the sorts of technological breakthroughs that were going to push the nation over the top to victory. Some of the stuff was real, some not like the moving fort/Howl s Castle above, and the floating fort, below. [++] I m not sure where a floating fort would make sense, especially one of that size. (Iterating the figures on deck into distance, it looks as though the deck on the floating platform was 150 or 200 square. It would ve looked like a big target from above.) Given the time and expense and material needed for such a thing, it seems that it would ve been cheaper to make a moveable fortress not quite so big, with less of a profile, and more mobile I think that this was called a destroyer or battleship . [++] But no matter, I m just poking fun at some of the future vision that became archaic the moment it was drawn, punk retro-future. All the pamphlet was trying to point out in its 32 pages was that overall the Brits were smarter than the Germans and that would be the balance for victory in the war. Hitler will get some very unpleasant surprises before this is over the author very politely pointed out, no doubt with one eyebrow raised. The scientists agreed. And they were right, which is all that matters.

[++] Unexpectedly there are only FOUR copies of this work found in WorldCat: Harvard, NYPL, British Library, and Trinity (Dublin). All of course top-rate. Evidently a scarce work. Even when searching Google under the full title there are almost no hits.

Provenance: Library of Congress, with their small rubber stamped "Pamphle…t Collections" on the cover and transfer stamp on the rear of the title page. GOOD copy, though printed on inferior paper. [++] NO COPIES are found in WorldCat and there is nothing at all about this work in a google search. Also for fun I tried some of the AI platforms and they were a whitewash or just simple and without any insight. [++] So I wondered what way this work was going to sawing regarding the Soviets, but a quick look at the table of contents (pictured in two images here) answered that quickly. There are free and abundant uses of "misery" and "barbarous" and "hell(ish)" and that sort. Also at the bottom corner of the last page is the printer slug stating the pamphlet wasprinted in February 1943, hich means if not Vichy then Nazi-directed Vichy or just Nazi propaganda. [++] Also, there is a mostly-faded rubber stamp along the top of the front cover that (with difficulty) reads "Inter-Departmental Committee for the Acquisition of Foreign Publications" (known as the IDC) which was an operation active during World War II. The IDC's purpose was to collect publications from other countries for distribution to U.S. government and research libraries, a mission that involved intelligence and strategic importance during the war.

This is publication NavShips 250-371, published by the Department of the Navy Bureau of Ships in April 1951. It is 11x8", offset printed, punch bound, and secured with aluminum screws in a decorated USN binding. The publication is only…80 pages long, and starts at the very beginning ("What is sound?") and works it way through the basics in 14pp or so, when we get to "machinery noise" and what can be done about it, as with "Noise Reduction with Isolation Mounts" on pg 17, when things begin to get complicated. Also: there is no record of the book being found in library holdings in WorldCat/OCLC. This is an excellent copy, nearly without blemish. [++] Only four copies located in libraries worldwide: U.S. Naval Academy, US Navy Department Library, SUGPO, and UNM Main. ++NOTE++ There is no discoloration on the blue cloth binding--the cloth just kept catching the light and so came this washed out look. The book in-peron is very sharp and a deep blue.

The binder is in FAIR condition (3/10), with the spine backstrip lacking and both boards detached. The text is dusted but crisp. Text is in GOOD condition (5-6/10), though probably a little better. __+__ This work states that it is based upon the Henry System (1) of fingerprint classification, which buy this point had been around for more than 50 years. It seems that the addition to the field that this work attempts to make is reordering the way in which fingerprint data is stored. The Henry System evidently used a cabinet drawer divided into 32x32 sections--here the sections are 12x12, though there are subdivisions of type patterns that seem to make the organization more extensive along with an additional numerical system (with arithmetical rules and functions) that I haven't devoted any time to understanding. __+__ This work is unknown to WorldCat/OCLC, and is not findable via standard means online. For one reason or another, this work received little or no circulation. __+__ NOTES: (1.) The Henry Classification System is a long-standing method (begun ca. 1877) by which fingerprints are sorted by physiological characteristics for one-to-many searching. Developed by Hem Chandra Bose, Azizul Haque and Sir Edward Henry in the late 19th century for criminal investigations in British India, it was the basis of modern-day AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) classification methods up until the 1990s.

The detraction is there there are five pinpricks in the upper left corner of the title page of this publication which means…that when unfolded those pinholes are right in the center of the poster. This is not horrible by any stretch, but the are there. Provenance: Library of Congress, with their small (10cm) "LC" perforated stamp on cover bottom and surplus stamp on rear (though not appearing when unfolding to the poster).

Only 2 copies located WorldCat/OCLC (National Library Scotland, British Library. __+__ "The Trade Union Centre for German Workers in Great Britain (TUCGWGB) was founded just before the outbreak of the Second World War, but did not begin its work in earnest until the release of many of the German exiles, who were interned at the outbreak of war. The chairman of the TUCGWGB, Hans Gottfurcht, had for many years been an active trade unionist in Germany, where he helped establish a number of illegal trade unions under the Nazis. The establishment of the TUCGWGB was regarded as necessary because of the particular situation brought about by the large influx of refugees and exiles. Whereas it would normally have been expected for these new arrivals to join existing British trade unions (which they did as well), there was always a sense that their stay in Great Britain would only ever be temporary, and that they needed a representative organisation that would reflect their particular interests. After the war and the demise of the TUCGWGB, Hans Gottfurcht went on to become a pivotal figure as liaison between the newly formed Deutsche Gewerkschaftsbund and the occupying British authorities."--the Wiener Library for the Study of the Holocaust and Genocide.

[++] The Free French, or "France Libre," was a movement during World War II that continued the fight against Nazi Germany after the fall of France in 1940. Led by General Charles de Gaulle, the Free French Forces operated from London and other locations, organizing resistance efforts and rallying support for the liberation of France. "Pierre de Lanux was involved in the French Resistance during World War II. He played an active role in opposing the Nazi occupation of France. His work with the Resistance included helping to forge documents and providing support to those escaping the regime. Lanux's commitment to the cause reflected his dedication to freedom and resistance against tyranny during a tumultuous period in history.".
