Condición: New. 2002 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1860, 2nd edn). SB. xvii + 455pp with three colour plates, three b/w portraits and 19 plans/mapsPublished Price £19.95 The Oxfordshire Light Infantry was one of a number of infantry regiments raised on the eve of the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and initially numbered 54th F…oot; two years later, in 1757, it was renumbered 52nd. In 1782 the line regiments were given territorial affiliations and the 52nd became the 52nd (Oxfordshire) Regt of Foot. In 1803 it was designated Light Infantry and its title changed accordingly to that shown in the title of this history. During the hundred years or so covered in this historical record the regiment served in Canada, America, India (before and during the Mutiny), Ceylon, the Peninsula, France and the Netherlands. The first ten years were spent in England and Ireland till, in 1765 the regiment sailed for Canada. It took part in the American War of Independence in which it suffered considerable casualties and finally returned to England at the end of 1778.There followed a spell of fifteen years in India during which it was involved in the Mysore War against Tippoo Sahib. From 1808 to 1814 the regiment was heavily engaged in the Peninsular War, of the twenty-three battle honours awarded during that campaign the Oxfordshires received thirteen and their losses amounted to 1,629 according to the casualty tables shown in the book. It was at Waterloo where it distinguished itself in its flank attack against the advancing Imperial Guard (The Old Guard) as it closed with the British Guards Brigade. The record closes with the return of the regiment from a second spell in India during which it was in action during the Indian Mutiny. This book is set out on a year-by-year basis; there are no chapters, just date headings starting from 1755 with the narrative describing all the events involving the regiment in that year. Some are very short, as, for example 1781: âThe 52nd Regiment, in 1781, was encamped at Rye.â Other years, such as the years of the Peninsular War, are full of detail, running into many pages and include correspondence, divisional orders, extracts from despatches and so forth. Casualty details. appear in the text, officers named and sometimes non-commissioned ranks. An appendix provides biographical notes on a number of officers and on a few non-commissioned officers, indicating where they are mentioned in the text, as in an index. Unfortunately there is no separate index, and as there is no contents list or chapter headings it is not always easy to find a particular action or event - unless you already know the date.

Añadir al carritoCloth. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Congregational Edition. Hardback. The Treasury. A Companion Tune Book. Foxing to end inside covers. Couple of marks to cloth. Black cloth with gilt lettering. The aim throughout has been to utilise and concentrate the excellencies of all leading collections, and to 'hold fast that which is… good' rather than to introduce new and untested music. Established names of tunes have not been altered, the best available arrangements have been selected, improvements on those of the School Edition have been adopted whatever experience has shewn these to be practicable, and in a few instances, where tunes include recurring phrases, varied harmonies have been introduced. The selection, while included an ample supply of good, simple, well-known tunes - the heritage of the Church iniversal - has also an excpetionally large number of the highest-class compositions; thus at once meeting the wants of our smaller churches and the requirements of our most advanced choirs and culturered congregations. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Cloth. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Reprint. Hardback prev owners name inside slightly sunned d/j spine A Random Walk in Science an Anthology.Includes Illustrations. Diagrams. Book overview: This anthology provides an insight into the wit and intellect of the scientific mind through a blend of amu…sing and serious contributions written by and about scientists. The contributions record changing attitudes within science and mirror the interactions of science with society. Editorial Review-Kirkus Reviews Copyright (c) VNU Business Media, Inc. An anthology of articles on the foibles of science--pure and applied--and the follies of scientists, written mostly by themselves (heavy on the physicists). Most of the pieces have been gathered from publications such as the American Journal of Physics, but there are excerpts from Aristophanes, Swift, Goethe and Carroll. Many demonstrate a pungent capacity for self-parody, as in ""The High.More Energy Physics Coloring Book"" or ""The Uses of Fallacy"" (""in reductio ad nauseum the lecturer's aim is to get everyone in the class asleep and not taking notes""). Occasionally, the jokes are lead balloons (""'What is v? ' 'Planck's constant. ' 'And h? ' 'The length of the plank'""), and one sometimes gets the impression that scientists are patting each other on the back for having a sense of humor. A few of the pieces make serious points about the practices of researchers. An engaging ""play of intellectual high spirits, or high intellectual spirits. A Random Walk in Science: An Anthology Compiled by the Late R L Weber (1913-1997) (ilustrador).

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. The original set of two matching volumes, from 1885, not a later reprint. Numerous small internal B&W hand-drawn illustrations, though the accompanying plates were sold in 19 large (folio), string-tied portfolios from 1904 to 1911, said large folios NOT included here. Both volu…mes stamped to title page "Presented by the Trustees of the British Museum." And both volumes show to front free endpapers the small bookplates of Christopher Rowe. However, it appears these Rowe bookplates were used to replace larger, original bookplates, since removed, indicating Mr. Rowe may not have been the original recipient of this presentation. These books show NO sign of any lending-library history. Both volumes all original, "good" to "very good," snugly bound in original brown endpapers and original pebbled brown cloth with gilt titles to spine, though with the board corners poking through. Vol. I also shows a half-inch tear to top of spine. The rear interior hinge of Vol. I is a bit unsightly from an old repair (See scan.) These two books will ship at a combined weight of a little more than 8 lbs. (3.6 kilos) So, Priority shipping will cost extra; overseas shipping is likely to run $70 or more. This matched set now reduced from $765.
