From dust jacket: As the great powers of the early modern age -- Spain, France, and England -- battled for supremacy throughout the Atlantic World, Pensacola became a highly coveted port. Beginning with initial settlement of the area in 1559 and ending with the city's forfeiture to the United States in 1821, Historic Pensacola draws on historical and archaeological records and offers a fascinating narrative of the bay's early days. The story of Pensacola is nothing if not a triumph of persistence. The "Panzacola", early native inhabitants of the bay area who lent their name to the modern city, settled along sheltered streams and rivers, but Europeans established permanent settlements on the bay itself, exposed locations vulnerable to the path of hurricanes. One such storm nearly destroyed the 1559 Spanish Pensacola settlement mere weeks after its founding and led to its abandonment two years later. It would be more than a century before Spain again staked a claim to the area. In 1719, the French gained control of that settlement, only to burn it as they abandoned their homes in the face of another violent tropical storm. For eighteen years, Pensacola served as the capital of the British West Florida colony, and still the captivating story of the city had just begun. Today, one need only cast an eye on the bay's shimmering waters while crossing the Pensacola Bay Bridge to recognize that it has lost none of its allure in almost five centuries. This beautiful natural harbor still stirs the senses, enlivens the spirit, and captivates the imagination of archaeologists and historians who are working to preserve its rich cultural heritage. Alongside copious historic illustrations and contemporary color photographs, John Clune and Margo Stringfield guide readers from Pensacola's hardtack beginnings in 1559 to the city's tremendous growth in the early nineteenth century. Traditional recipes from each settlement period provide a unique look into the daily lives of the people who endured hardship, disease, and hurricanes to settle the Gulf coast frontier. The result is a highly readable account of a city with a rich and fascinating past. Florida, Floridiana, Florida History, United States History, U. S.
