Kaufman (1925-1986), born Robert Garnell Kaufman, was an American Beat poet and surrealist inspired by jazz music. In France, where his poetry had a large following, he was known as the "American Rimbaud." Like many beat writers, Kaufman became a Buddhist. In 1959, along with Allen Ginsberg, John Kelly, A. D. Winans, and William Margolis, he was one of the founders of Beatitude magazine. Illustrated with b/w photographs and reproductions. List of Kaufman's Works and Publisher's Catalog at rear. Clay has also included his address at the time in San Francisco and phone number. Clay was a member of the Living Theatre and was in their legendary production "Paradise Now". He died in San Francisco at the age of 79. This book is dedicated to Bob Kaufman with exceptionally rare photographs some by Chris Felver, Raymond Foye, Eileen Kaufman, Ira Cohen, and many others. Janine carried this book around with her so very good pictorial wraps. All dedicated to Kaufman's own works. A strong association copy.
