British civil servant (1884-1958), controller of public relations at the BBC from 1935 to 1940. Two pages, 4to. Very good, but with minor traces of tape adhering to two edges. Marked 'Private & Personal'. He thanks his correspondent for writing so fully and heartily sympathizes. 'Practically, I am not at all clear what the issue of the delay will be so far as I, and so far as Ryan, are concerned. The B.B.C. job [.] has been announced sooner than was intended & has not lightened my day's work. Ryan is uncertain when he will get away, but may be off at the beginning of August.' He is 'still prepared to do anything I can [.] when your Boards have made up their minds. But I clearly can't make promises on this uncertain basis'. Signed 'Stephen Tallents'.

Condición: Good. Herbert Evelyn Caulfield Gatliff fought with the Coldstream Guards in the great War, although his pacifist views meant that he served just 6 months. Gatliff had a long career in the Civil Service working in a senior role at Treasury. He was also known for his love of nature and walking and was instrumental in setting up Youth Hostel in the Hebrides. The Gatliff Trust continues to this day. In this letter he writes of the passing of his father, his relocation to Devonshire, for the sake of his daughter Jane's health and schooling, his lack of knowledge of the 'Australian branch of the Family,' although he does see Guy Innes' name (well known Fleet Street Journalist) from time to time. Double sided letter, dated August 7, 1935. Creases to letter. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript.

12mo, 1 p. Nine lines. Text clear and complete. Fair, on aged paper, with a neat cut (not affecting text) neatly repaired on reverse. The Registrar at the India Office has informed Lyall that Lane-Poole's name is 'on the list of those to whom the India Archaeological Reports are sent'.

Both cards plain with printed stamp and 9 x 11 cm. Both bearing the Society's oval purple stamp. Card One: He is 'leaving town on business for two or three days' and so cannot attend the meeting of the Indian Section Committee. Card Two: He will 'with pleasure support Abney if in town', but may not be there on the day.
