Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. The first in-depth study of the landmark modern feminist magazine, Time and TideThis book reconstructs the first two decades of Time and Tide (1920-1939) and explores the periodical's significance for an interwar generation of British women writers and readers. Unique in establishing itself as the only female-run intellectual weekly in the golden age of the weekly review, Time and Tide both challenged persistent prejudices against women's participation in public life and played an instrumental role in redefining women's gender roles and identities. Drawing on extensive new archival research Catherine Clay recovers the contributions to this magazine of both well-and lesser-known British women writers, editors, critics, and journalists and explores a cultural dialogue about literature, politics and the arts that took place beyond the parameters of modernist 'little magazines'. The book makes a major contribution to the history of women's writing and feminism in Britain between the wars.Key FeaturesThe first in-depth study, based on extensive new archival research, of the richest two decades of this landmark feminist magazineShows how this female-run periodical secured a position among the leading general-audience intellectual weeklies of the day by tracing its close interdependence, and competition, within a changing set of interwar periodical structures and networksRecovers the contributions to this magazine of both well-known and undeservedly forgotten British women writers and criticsExplores a cultural dialogue about literature, politics and the arts that took place beyond the parameters of modernist 'little magazines' and mass-market periodicals This book reconstructs the first two decades of Time and Tide (1920-1939) and explores the periodical's significance for an interwar generation of British women writers and readers. Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: VG. 1st Edition. No date, circa 1980's, 12pp, printed on one side only, green printed wraps, very bright, clean copy, wraps offset a bit at edges apparently from the printing process. Item appears to have been self-published, with no date, place, or publisher, thus it is unknown how many copies were done, presumably a small number. The original diary is in the University of Kentucky Library Special Collections. We suspect someone transcribed the diary into a typescript, and made copies. Research locates Mary Katharine Rogers, b. 1844, Bourbon County, d. January 11, 1928, Lexington, Kentucky, mother Henrietta "Hettie" Roseberry, of Bourbon County, father William S. Rogers, Fayette County, who married Samuel Clay, Jr., and had 4 children: Belle, b. 1861, William Rogers, b. 1864, Bishop, b. 1866, and Samuel Blair, b. 1873. Adult Mary was a member of the Filson Club Historical Society, Louisville, and would write The Genealogy Of The Clays, for Filson Club Publication #14, The Clay Family, published by John P. Morton & Company, Louisville, 1899, which includes a photo of the author. She was also the editor of the genealogical columns for the Courier Journal newspaper, Louisville. From the opening entry, "I have never kept a diary or journal but have always wished that I had patience sufficient, if that is the virtue that prompts one to note down the little incidents in one's life -- or I should have said to continue the noting of trifling circumstances. I think such an exercise very improving. In the first place, if one will take pains in the expression of their thoughts in every day life, it will assist them in cultivating the conversational powers and secondly, it will enable them to learn more of their own hearts, which knowledge, some philosopher has said, 'is the first to be gained.'" Names include Aunt Carrie Garrett, Brother Byron from Georgia, Nannie Bedford, Laura Russell, Mr. E. Garrard, Mr. Wash Clay, Mr. Bedford, Mr. Clay, Mr. Pickrell, Uncle Ben, Mrs. Martin and daughters, Sue Moore, Uncle High, Mr. D. Holdreth, Mr. Amende, Mr. Gano, Sam and John, Aunt Hettie, Mr. and Mrs. McMillan, Mr. and Mrs. L. Talbott, Mrs. Todd Wilson, Aunt Beck, Mr. Sandusky, Natie, Dr. Barnes, Little Jessie, Misses Williams, Lizzie, Mrs. Hamilton, Aunt Mary, Grandfather Roseberry, Cousin Carrie, Mr. J. T. Woodford, Mrs. Buckner, Mr. John Kennedy, Mr. Lindsay, Mrs. Lauff, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ford, and place names New Forest, Rockland, Elerslie, Roseberryland, and various others during the subject's family trip out of state. Very scarce.
