Hard Back. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. 337 Pages Indexed. Brown boards with dark brown lettering on the spine. Previous owner's name and date stamped on the front endpaper. No other defects noted and interior text pages are near flawless. The purpose of this book is to study the terrible erosion that hunger causing in t…he human race and its civilization. an erosion that threatens to blot from the earth all the gigantic works of man. If mankind does not try, urgently and on a world scale. to stop this corrosive action, all the creations of humanity will soon crumble and be buried in the dust of time, and that will happen long before the wind and water have consumed the incalculable potential resources of the soil. The very humanity that is frightened by the remote danger of a world turned desert through exhaustion of its natural resources will witness the arrival of a world depopulated. Dr. de Castro maintains that mass hunger which affects two thirds of the world's population is not the result of overpopulation, as has been claimed by some experts. On the contrary, Dr. de Castro maintains, overpopulation is the result of hunger. Hunger is not the effect of overpopulation, but the cause. This revolutionary scientific concept - that malnutrition is a factor leading to overpopulation - opens up entirely new horizons for world demographic policy. It offers an efficient means of controlling natural population growth - by the use of an adequate diet. Supporting his argument with astonishing and sometimes terrifying facts and figures, Dr. de Castro shows how a billion and a half people now live in a permanent state of hunger, even though the world has at its disposal enough resources to provide an adequate diet for everybody, everywhere. Less dramatic, but not less lethal than the 1829 famines that have swept across China in the last 2000 years, is the hidden hunger which condemns whole populations to die, even though they eat every day. The ravages of hidden hunger arc seen almost everywhere in the world. They range all the way from the tragic indifference to life which is supposedly typical of certain poverty· stricken populations, to rickets, pellagra, beriberi, tuberculosis and other diseases. Hunger, too, has been the most common cause of war and revolution. Famine rides at the head of the Four Horse- men, and War, Pestilence and Death press close behind. This is a book that may well change world thinking on one of mankind's most crucial problems. It is above all a hopeful book for, as Dr. de Castro abundantly demonstrates, we hold the solution to that problem in our own hands.

hardcover. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. New York. 1966. October 1966. Random House. 1st Printing. Underlining, Otherwise Very Good in Dustjacket. 207 pages. hardcover. Jacket design by Adelson and Eichinger. keywords: Latin America Brazil History Sociology. DESCRIPTION - The northeast of Brazil is a disa…ster area. its twenty-three million people live in the destitute remnants of a feudal society: In some sections the average annual income is fifty dollars; three quarters of its people arc illiterate, and half of them die before the age of thirty. Moreover, the interior is plagued by long and catastrophic droughts and famines. JosuE de Castro, a son of the Northeast, warns that the region 'has great as explosive potential as the Congo, South Africa, India or Vietnam,' and in this he is backed up by Tad Szulc, who stated flatly in The New York Times that 'the Northeast will go Communist and have a situation ten times worse than Cuba if something is not done.' Dr. Castro contends and demonstrates that the tragedy of this area does not stem mainly from climate and soil, but was guaranteed by the inherent defects of the merciless social and economic system which was established by its feudalist Portuguese colonizers and is remarkably little changed. He recounts the sad history of this region and draws melancholy conclusions about the future of strife, revolution and f)ohtical violence, unless peaceful hut complete revolution is achieved. The Alliance for Progress is also indicted for its inability to bring ai)out reform here, and elsewhere in South America, and for even tending to support, in certain instances, the hegemony of tile entrenched oligarchy. All attempts to aid the people of the Northeast, including the Alliance, have ended, Dr. Castro remarks, in 'nostalgia and regret.' This region stands for all the undiluted misery of destitution and all the conditions of injustice that have held down vast numbers of the world's population If Americans are to understand tile extent and the complexities of the underdeveloped world, and the intensity of its peoples' needs, they must face all the facts about them. This book makes these facts unmistakably, and unforgettably, clear. inventory #15158 Underlining, Otherwise Very Good in Dustjacket.

Translated from the Portuguese by Susan Hertelendy. 190 pages. hardcover. Jacket design & illustration: ADAMIAK. keywords: Latin America Brazil…Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - In OF MEN AND CRABS, Dr. JosuE de Castro, one of the world's great authorities on hunger, writes a novel about hunger's drama. His poignant story is set in Recife, Brazil, a city of rivers and bridges and mansions, of mud and mangrove and clay shacks. In its marshes live both men and crabs, all obsessed by the craving for food. Here a small boy, João Paulo, discovers the real meaning of hunger-the hunger of the crabs at the water's edge waiting for the current to bring them a scrap; the hunger of the men sitting on the rail of the old quay dribbling with dreams of imaginary meals. Without really understanding, Joäo Paulo lives in hunger's constant presence-a presence that shapes all the behavior of Recife's people. With despotic iron hands, it makes of both men and crabs a mire that is not only Recife's, but belongs as well to two billion others who know its ravaging anguish. OF MEN AND CRABS is a story of and for our time, a totally human story of a universal drama being played daily throughout the world. inventory #28095.
