The book has a personal value as it shows him in his family life. It shows Lee's attitude in defeat. He was beaten, completely and hopelessly beaten. In Lee's last years his countrymen in all the States of the Confederacy looked up to him as their guide and leader. There is an Appendix of Unpublished Letters and an Index. Pp167 There is light tanning throughout but no markings of any kind. It has rough deckled page edges. Previous owner's name appears on the first page. Spine is loosened somewhat but not separated. Lee and Mary Anna Randolph Custis. He became a soldier during the American Civil War, and later was a planter, businessman, and author. Captain Lee's Recollections have a peculiar and personal value which can hardly be replaced or superseded by any other book, and those who have been led by historical study to have a personal affection for the great soldier will find in these pages an intimate access to his heart which they can obtain in no other way. Also in this book are an Appendix of unpublished letters and index. There are pp. 167.
