Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Poor. Top corner of front flyleaf has former ownership signature "Alice H. Sherwood, Auburn, R.I., July 16, 1899." Spine cloth is gone, with spine lining stained; binding is very worn; corners bumped and worn; hinges are broken; free front endpaper and page groupings at front and back are loose, present; many margins (and some edges of the text) have closed tears and/or chips and/or soil; as a small part of the bottom corner of one leaf was apparently torn out, a photocopy of the missing text was laid onto the corner of that leaf (not a very pretty restoration job, but functional); pages and plates at back are dampstained; reading copy only. The double chromolithograph at front and title page are present, followed by pages [i]-x, 33-503, with in-text illustrations, the aforementioned double chromolithograph, and 96 p. of black and white plates, present and accounted for (as for the text and table of contents beginning with p. 33, which is how the book was published, I suspect that two of the 16-p. groupings of plates were originally slated to be bound in before the first page of text (and be counted as pages), but that plan changed and the pagination was never corrected; also, if you count the double chromo as 2 p. of plates, there are a total of 98 p. of plates, making the title-page claim, "Magnificently illustrated with over 100 full-page engravings" another inaccuracy). Large, heavy volume [otob: 41 (ck 43)].

Añadir al carritoCondición: New. 2004 N&M Press reprint (of original 1920 pub). SB. xi + 198pp with 7 maps (6 in colour)Published Price £14.50 In his foreword to this book, Winston Churchill rightly calls it a âplain yet careful record of the fortunes and services of the 4th (Queenâs Own) Hussars in the Great War (which) deserves and will repay attentive study from those to whom the history of the regiments of the British Army is of vivid interestâ. The 4th Queenâs Own were one of the Armyâs elite cavalry regiments which fulfilled their traditional role in the open warfare which characterised the campaigns in 1914 and 1918 at the beginning and end of the Great War. In between, of course, came the static horrors of trench warfare, when, as Churchill tactfully says: âthe fond hopes which cavalry Generals and cavalry soldiers cherished of a great eruption of cavalry through the German lines as the culmination of a decisive battle never materialisedâ. Nevertheless, the 4th took part in the retreat from Mons in 1914; the first and second battle of Ypres - in which they experienced the first German poison gas attack - and the battles of Loos, the Somme and Arras. In 1918 they saw action in both the great German spring offensives and the victorious allied counter-attacks that summer and autumn. Illustrated with maps, photographs and appendices containing rolls of honour, decorations, lists of officers etc. this is a complete unit history for those interested in cavalry regiments in the Great War.

Later dark brown half morocco over brick cloth; raised bands on spine with lettering and ornamentation in gilt; marbled endpapers; pp. [ii], 5, iii, 262, [17], vii; with 4 photographic plates, and 17 plates after drawings; with a tipped-in printed note from the author at the start of chapter 1; Royal Asiatic Society stamp to title-page, overstamped as 'Sold'; even light discolouration to paper-stock; a few light spots to outer edge; unobtrusive pencil inscriptions; a very good copy on this rare work of a practical guide to elephant health. Third edition. Evans notes in the Preface that this text is a revision of the earlier work on elephants originally written by Mr J. Slymm, Deputy Conservator of Forests in Burma. The text moves from detailing general information about elephants and their habits, into specific diseases and parasites that can infect them, with a number of remedies and treatments for such ailments. The tipped-in slip makes an appeal to readers of the guide, asking 'to assist by kindly favouring with careful notes on cases, specimens of parasites, &c., in order that, should it be found desirable to bring out another edition, it may be more complete.'.
