Añadir al carritoHardcover. vi, 181 p.; 6 halftone pl.; 22 cm. From the jacket flap: Dr Battersby 'has drawn on Brother Solomon's own letters, the archives of the De La Salle Brothers and numerous contemporary eye-witness accounts (including those of English travellers such as Horace Walpole and Arthur Young) to portray not only the unflinching courage of Brother Solomon and his companions in the sombre months of persecution that preceded the Terror but also the tragic conflict of loyalties that extended even into the Church. Piece by piece Dr Battersby fills in the details and reveals that heroic sanctity is not necessarily a characteristic of extraordinary personalities but comes equally from the kind of man who began as Nicolas LeClercq, the son of a Boulogne wine merchant destined for a career in his father's business and a quiet life. We see the background of Brother Solomon's early years set in a France where most people were totally unaware of the disaster that was being prepared.' -- 'That nothing should be wanting to satisfy the interested visitor, the skulls and bones of the victims which were dug up in the garden [of the Carmelite monastery] in 1867 may be seen in the crypt of the church; a sad and lugubrious sight. But they are preserved as the relics of martyrs, for on 17th October 1926, Pope Pius XI, in acknowledgement of the fact that these men died rather than take the schismatic Civil Oath, declared Brother Solomon and ninety-four of his companions 'Blessed', together with seventy-two of those killed in Saint-Firmin prison, three in La Force, and twenty-one in the Abbey.' Añadir al carritoSecondary title" Hardie's Guide to Lookout Mountain, Being a Complete Guide to all the Points of Interest Around and in the Immediate Neighborhood. Embellished with Views Copied from Photographs Made Especially for this Work." Pocket-sized hardcover booklet: H 15cm x L 12.75cm. Stiff dark red cloth boards soiled and rubbed, several small discolored spots along spine, front board's gilt stamped lettering and decorative border remain reasonably bright but not vibrant with modest dulling to gilt nearest fore-edge, some scuffing along board edges. 31 pages of text with preceded by 28 b/w images of Lookout Mountain, Sunset Rock, Missionary Ridge, Chattanooga, etc. on a single-sided foldout strip (approximate dimensions H 14.25cm x L 140cm) forming twelve leaves. Strong browning to rear free endpaper with lighter toning to other text leaves. Foldout image strip is completely detached from first image page which also serves as the front pastedown with second page having some red color bleed presumably from boards occurring along fore-edge margin; two initial leaves also have short tears along page folds with one lightly creased corner. Authorship is attributed to Hardie Brothers of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee but page 2 of the text section has a brief essay titled "To the Visitor" by W.C. Dickey. Remaining text features a review of local landmarks, describes a mountain ascent via the standard gauge railroad, provides a summary of the November 24, 1863 conflict, and concludes with an unattributed 5 page poem titled "Battle of Lookout Mountain." OCLC cites a mere two copies held by member libraries. Only a good copy of a rather scarce tourist guidebook publication.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. Octavo, pp. [vi], 282. Illustrated with full-page wood engravings from designs by eminent artists. Signed & Inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front flyleaf: "To Charles Churchill Osborne - with Mrs. S. C. Hall's best wishes and kind regards - Anna Maria Hall. 1875." Provenance & Association:The recipient, Charles Churchill Osborne (1859-1944), was a notable Victorian literary figure and journalist who served as the private secretary to Baroness Angela Burdett-Coutts. He is best remembered as the editor of The Letters of Charles Dickens to the Baroness Burdett-Coutts (published 1931).This presentation inscription creates a fascinating literary bridge: Anna Maria Hall was one of the most prominent Irish women writers of the 19th century, while Osborne operated at the heart of the Charles Dickens circle. Ironically, Dickens famously based his unflattering caricature of the hypocritical Mr. Pecksniff (in Martin Chuzzlewit) on Anna Maria's husband, Samuel Carter Hall—a literary connection that Osborne himself later documented in his biographical writings. The book is in very good condition Lovely embossed gold and lilac cloth cover. Firmly bound. All illustrations present. Only very limited spotting on first few pages. First edition 1875 signed.
