Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. A well loved and used, navy coloured, hardback book in reasonably good condition. Normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. Pencil date and lettering on first and last blank pages. First published July 1955, Second Impression October 1955, this specific book was reprinted 1956. 224 pages, all intact, all pages, text and illustrations are in good, clean, readable order. Slight fading on edge of papers. This a lovely book about naval signals. A signal is a sign which conveys information. This book is concerned mainly with the pre-microphone period: with signals that travel alone and, like telegrams, have to be carefully worded to be readily understood. Unlike telegrams, however they are impersonal and public. They carry the authority of a ship or a squadron. They are paid with reputations, sometimes even with human lives. The era of such signals produced craftsmen who could compose on a pad the exact phrase to suit the situation. Their signals had power and penetration; they inspired, provoked, amused or debunked with an aptitude all of their own. A signal at sea which commended was round the ship like a flash of light. One which reproved spread gloom just as quickly. A brilliant book that is full of fascinating information and experiences of that period in time.
