Brogiolo. - This volume examines changing perceptions and ideals of town life, from the classical cwitas/polis (the lynch-pin of ancient civilisation) to the medieval city (still playing many central roles, but with less of the ideological charge characteristic of Antiquity). One central theme is the persistent shadow of the ancient cityin crumbling ancient buildings, and the survival of Roman styles of urban lay-out; and in the way that cities were depicted both visually (in iconography that changed only very slowly, if at all), and verbally (in the persistence of often outmoded classical terms and descriptions). Yet the ideal of the city was also changing and developing, especially around the idea of a new, specifically Christian city, protected by its saints and by its churches. - Gian Pietro Brogiolo teaches Medieval Archaeology at the University of Padua. His interests are in the towns and countryside of early medieval Italy, and he has excavated extensively in Lombardy, particularly at Brescia and Monte Barro. He has published numerous articles on the cities of Byzantine and Lombard Italy, and is the author of Brescia altomedievale. Urbanistica ed edilizia dal IV al IX secolo (1993). Alla fine degli anni '80 la benemerita Società Archeologica Veneta aveva promosso, sotto la direzione di Gian Pietro Brogiolo, campagne di scavi dapprima nel castello di San Martino… della Vaneza a Cervarese Santa Croce (1987), poi sulla Rocca di Monselice dal 1988 al 1996, entrambe finanziate dalla Cassa di Risparmio di Padova e Rovigo. La storia di questa cittadina dei Colli Euganei è quella di un rilevante centro strategico del nord-est della Penisola che, dopo la sua conquista da parte di Agilulfo agli inizi del VII secolo e il declassamento amministrativo di Padova e di Este, fu capoluogo di un distretto confinante con i potenti ducati di Verona e Vicenza e con i territori dell'impero. Si è tentato di combinare i dati tradizionali offerti dalle fonti scritte, dalla cartografia e dagli scavi archeologici con nuove linee di ricerca che si basano sulle analisi GIS (sia per la città sia per il territorio), il remote sensing (il LiDAR principalmente) in una visione sistemica della storia di un territorio nella quale paesaggi agrari, incolto, architetture (fortificazioni, residenze e chiese) costituiscono gli elementi ancora conservati del nostro passato.
