Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Interest in the book of Revelation in the Western tradition is stronger and earlier than that in the East. The earliest full commentary on the Apocalypse is that of Victorinus of Petovium written in the mid to late third century by the earliest exegete to write in Latin. Victorinus interpreted Revelation in millennialist terms, a mode of interpretation already evident in works by Irenaeus, as well as in modest allegorical terms.Caesarius of Arles wrote in the early sixth century and offered a thoroughgoing allegorical-ecclesial interpretation of the Apocalypse. Apringius of Beja in Portugal, writing in the mid sixth century, drew on Jerome's edition of Victorinus's commentary yet understood the seven seals christologically as the incarnation, birth, passion, death, resurrection, glory and kingdom.Bede the Venerable, who died in 735, is the last commentator to be included in this collection. Characteristically, he passes on commentary from earlier exegetes, here including that of Augustine, Gregory the Great, Victorinus, Tyconius and Primasius.William Weinrich renders a particular service to readers interested in ancient commentary on the Apocalypse by drawing together these significant Latin commentaries. The work of translating these texts was begun in preparing the volume on Revelation in the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. We are indebted to William Weinrich for completing this work with his able and fresh translation and notes on these texts.Ancient Christian Texts are new English translations of full-length commentaries or sermon series from ancient Christian authors that allow you to study key writings of the early church fathers in a fresh way. In this volume of the Ancient Christian Texts series, William Weinrich renders a particular service to readers interested in ancient commentary on the Apocalypse by drawing together significant Latin commentaries from Victorinus of Petovium, Caesarius of Arles, Apringius of Beja and Bede the Venerable. Sturdy quarter brown leather binding with light beige cloth boards. Five raised bands adorn the spine with gilt accents, and a burgundy leather label stamped in gilt lettering. Red sprinkled edges. 24 pp., 192 pp., 68 pp., [pagination 53-120], 69 pp., 344 pp. A large copy, this book measures 13 inches tall x 7.75 inches wide x 2 inches thick.ABOUT THE AUTHORS: William Allen (c. 1614-1686) was an English theological writer, respected voice within the 17th century church of England, and a contemporary of Thomas Bray. Allen is known for his defense of the Church of England and his scholarly focus on the nature of faith and covenants. His work, "A Discourse of the Nature, Ends, and Difference of the Two Covenants", became a significant contribution to covenant theology, arguing that justifying faith is inherently linked to evangelical obedience.Thomas Bray (1656?1730) was an English Anglican priest, philanthropist and abolitionist who helped formally establish the Church of England in Maryland, as well as the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge and Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. Bray is primarily recognized for his foundational role in global missionary and educational organizations. A contemporary of William Allen, Bray famously compiled Allen's works alongside his own in the 1703 collection, Two Select Discourses on Faith. His most significant personal writing was "A Course of Lectures Upon the Church Catechism" (1696), which provided a structured foundation for Anglican instruction.John Kettlewell (1653?1695) was a prominent English clergyman, leading member of the Nonjuror movement, and devotional writer. Kettlewell was highly regarded for his "practical" theology, which emphasized the lived experience of faith and moral duty. In the 1703 volume edited by Thomas Bray, Kettlewell?s "The Practical Believer" was paired with the works of William Allen to provide a complete manual of Anglican doctrine and spiritual discipline.CONDITION: Mild external wear with some soiling and light dampstain. A few portions of pages have some moisture marks, and others have mild to moderate browning/smudges. The first several pages have slight paper loss to the fore-edges, yet doesn't affect the text. At over 300 years old, the leaves are in very nice condition. In fact, the entire book is quite well-preserved. Only occasional annotation in antiquarian dipped ink. A beautiful antiquarian treasure and a wonderful addition to any theologian's collection. Full refund if not satisfied.

Añadir al carritoThis is an unusual book made up of the catechetical writings of three authors - William Allen, John Kettlewell [Kettelwell] and Thomas Bray. It has a title page dated 1699, but each individual discourse has its own title page, usually dated 1703. The book is quarto (12 inches by 8 inches) and bound in full brown calf. The binding is rubbedand the joints are beginning to crack, but the book is intact and the contents are generally good to very good. The contents are as follows: (1) William Allen - Certain select disourses on thos emost important subjects, requisite to be well understood by a Catechist in laying the foundation of Christian Knowledge in the minds of Novitiates, viz, first, discourse on the doctrine of the two covenants both legal and evangical, and on faith and justification. [x], 69pp; [vi], 24pp. (2) John Kettlewell - the practical believer, or the articles of the Apostels creed, drawn out to form a true Christian's heart, and practice. [viii], 112pp, [viii], pp141-192, pp 53-120. (3) Thomas Bray - Catechetical lectures on the preliminary questions and answers of the church-catechism, giving an account of the whole doctrine of the Covenant of Grace, and of the nature, terms and conditions of the same, shewing also by whose meditation it was obtained for us, by what asistance we shall be enabled to perform it, and our obligations thereunto. [xxx], 344pp. The British Library have a copy of Allen's work bound with Kettlewell's work, in which the pagination of Kettlewell is the same as this copy. The British Library copy does not include the work by Thomas Bray. The overall 1699 title page covers Allen and Bray, but makes no mention of the Kettlewell work. Thomas Bray (1656 - 1730) was influential in the creation of the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge and was heavily involved in organising the Church of England in Maryland.
