Añadir al carritoLetter: 1p., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly creased and aged. With a few autograph emendations. In a characteristically eccentric letter he writes that their common friend Jimmy Linton has told Bowman that Duncan 'may be able to give me some particulars and perhaps a photo of Edith LORAINE who played Godiva in F. B. Woulfe's Company, presenting the famous historical play by Max Goldberg, (John F. Preston.) He refers to Mabelle F. Barlow, Lady Astor and his own play 'Divorce or Dishonour'. As a boy he was greatly impressed by Loraine's performance, and it 'started my interest in Coventry. As President of The Animal Service Association, I am still very attached to white horses. [.] Edith had a tragic finish on Armistice Night, 1918, falling from a London balcony.' Badge: Circular and 2cm in diameter. Printed in brown on cream. In good condition, with slight rusting to the metal reverse, which has transferred slightly to the letter, on which it is pinned. Showing 'SHAKESPEARE SOUVENIR | A MAKE-UP IMRESSION | FREDERICK H. U. BOWMAN'. Bowman also produced a series of fake postage stamps, with him made up to look like the monarch. For more on Bowman see A. W. B. Simpson's 'In the Highest Degree Odious' (1994). Bowman received his 'knighthood' from Count Potocki de Montalk in March 1943, and was deprived of it the following year for alleged lèse majesté and breach of his oath of fealty. As the present letter indicates, this did not prevent him from continuing to use his 'title'.

Añadir al carrito8vo bifolium (157 x 99 mm), pp. [2]; paper with Bowman's embossed crest at head of first page; sometime folded, in excellent condition.Bowman writes to 'Mr Cooke' to postpone a visit, having heard from 'Mr Webb' that he is to give evidence at a trial. 'Mr Webb proposes Thursday week the 27th on which day we could be with you at the hour previously arranged for, supposing the day quite suits you.''Mr Webb' is no doubt the architect Philip Webb (18311915), who in 1870 was commissioned by Bowman to design a house in Arts and Crafts style, Joldwynds, completed in 1875. One of Webb's most important country houses, it was demolished in 1930 and replaced with the present modernist edifice. We have been unable to identify 'Mr Cooke', but he is likely to have been connected in some way with Bowman's building project.Bowman was the leading ophthalmic surgeon in London. Hemade 'fundamental contributions to histology and to the knowledge of the structure of the eye, the kidney and striated muscle, and of other structures. These achievements are the more remarkable when it is recalled that he employed relatively simple techniques and that no highly accurate microtome or staining techniques were then available. Bowmanprofoundly influenced anatomical thinking and teaching by constantly relating minutely described anatomical structures to their physiological functions. Through his skills as an anatomist and microscopist he set a model for future research in physiology and histology . . . . A handsome and slender man, who rarely drank, never smoked, and was abstemious in eating, he exemplified certain Victorian virtues through his dignity and reserve, his early rising and constant hard work, and his religious piety (of a dissenting nature). Bowmandid not write a book of his own, but through his twenty-three papers and his entries in anatomical encyclopaedias, he became one of the most important English figures of the nineteenth century in the fields of anatomy, histology, and ophthalmic surgery' (ODNB). Original printed wrappers; covers off, stitching sprung, spine and extremities chipped. Ex library rubber stamps and ms. notations on top cover. Good. "Bowman's classic description of the anatomy and contracility of striated muscle fibrils was hardly improved upon until the advent of the electron microscope. He was the first to give a complete description of the fascicular tunic, which he named sarcolemma." Haskell Norman Library. The first part of William Bowman's professional career (up to 1842) concentrated on histological studies which resulted in the publication of Physiological anatomy and physiology of man (1843-1856) published with Robert Bentley Todd (1809-1860). This work was an important landmark and displayed Bowman's accurate eye and descriptive pen, and artistic pencil which produced masterly accounts of histology. New and detailed descriptions were made of skin, muscle, nerves, sense organs, kidney, bone, and cartilage. On 18 June 1840 the paper "On the minute structure and movement of voluntary muscle" was communicated to the Royal Society by Todd. It resulted in Bowman's election to fellowship at the age of twenty-five. This paper is a follow-up to that landmark paper.
