Washington History is the only scholarly journal devoted exclusively to the history of our nation's capital. Started in 1989, the journal replaced the original Records of the Columbia Historical Society, printed since 1897. Washington History is filled with scholarly articles, reviews, and a rich array of images and is written and edited by distinguished historians and journalists. Each year, the Historical Society published two issues of Washington History. Encouraging research on the history of Washington, D.C. is one of the Society's goals. For Washington History this bicentennial had been a magnet, drawing together research on the history of early Washington that had been in progress for several years. The articles in this special issue explode myths, offer new insights and interpretations, and gather previously scattered information and images that were intended to make this special bicentennial issue a central reference on the early history of the city.
