El libro narra el viaje que Filomeno Borrero realizó de 1865 a 1867. Al finalizar el siglo XIX, Borrero había visitado: Colombia, las Antillas, Brasil, el Río de la Plata, Portugal, España (Andalucía, Castilla, Aragón y Cataluña), Norte de Italia, Venecia, Roma, Nápoles, Alejandría, Jerusalen, Palestina, Belén, Constantinopla, el Danubio, Europa Central, Prusia, Norte de Europa, Países Bajos, Alemania, Francia y Suiza. Fue muy corriente que los colombianos de mediados del siglo XIX escribieran libros de viajes, aunque este es uno de los que comprenden mayor número de países visitados. Algunas noticias indican que el libro lo escribió el sacerdote don Juan Buenaventura Ortiz con los apuntes que le ofreció el mismo Filomeno Borrero.
