Tomás Borrás se hace eco de esa histeria, del temor colectivo a la Quinta Columna que se embosca en cada casa y justifica crueldades y sevicias sin igual. Publicada por primera vez en 1939, Checas de Madrid es, en este sentido, un cuadro expresionista sobre los horrores de la Guerra Civil española. Son dos sus referentes: de un lado, la estética negra de Goya; de otro, el modo sincopado del cinematógrafo. Terminada cuando la guerra llegaba a su fin, la novela es mucho más que una diatriba antirrepublicana: su prosa, desnuda y directa, la convierte en expresión descarnada del horror.
