Sanford later commented about this book that "It was, and it is, an unrelenting and accusatory book. No one who values his country can find its charges easy to bear-and yet I value my country, too, and the book was written only to make it better." It is a book that exposes the rapaciousness and the cruelty and self-interest often underlying our country's history. Sanford was blacklisted by the House for Unamerican Activities in the 1950s and one wonders if this book would find a publisher today. Sanford was also the recipient of the PEN Award and the Los Angeles Times Lifetime Achievement.
