About the book >.>.> Although Rothamsted is not concerned with animal research, it is not altogether inappropriate that what is probably the finest collection of prints and paintings of British farm livestock should be housed in its library; for Rothamsted attracts from all parts of the world numerous visitors whose interests range over every branch of agriculture. More-over, the livestock prints constitute an appropriate parallel to our collec-tion of early agricultural books which is justly regarded as one of the richest in existence. My predecessor, Sir John Russell, acquired a considerable number of the prints, but it was the bequest of the late Lord Northbrook which raised the collection to the first rank. Francis, fourth Baron Northbrook, who died in 1947, had for many years been an enthusiastic connoisseur and collector of British livestock prints, and combined a thorough knowledge of livestock with a discerning aesthetic judgement of representations of them.
