Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. [Sheet Music] 6 total pages (illustrated front cover blank on back followed by 3 pages of music, numbered 2-4 and a blank final page). 34 cm. Disbound (removed from a bound volume with usual stitch marks, etc.). Front cover has some soiling and minor foxing. The blank verso of the cover has substantial offsetting from the facing page of music. Pages 3 & 4 of the music have substantial foxing. Offsetting on last blank page indicates that this Blind Tom piece had been bound in next to a piece whose title seems to have been "Great Western Quick Step." This arresting image of young Thomas Wiggins, then about ten was also used for his Virginia Polka and perhaps other "Blind Tom" compositions, as is indicated at the bottom of the front cover where "Oliver Gallop" and "Virginia Polka" are both listed with our title underlined in red. 3 1/2 is printed inside a printed six-pointed star at lower right beneath the cover image (significance, if any, unknown to us). An uncommon piece of sheet music. Printed on the first page of printed music below title:"The following is from the Baltimore Sun of June 27th 'TOM' the MUSICAL WONDER.-- We enjoyed an opportunity last night to hear the performance of the blind negro boy 'TOM' at Carrol Hall, and though prepared for something uncommon, all expectation was surpassed by the reality. Nay more, all preconceived ideas of music as a science, an art or an acquisition, were thoroughly baffled, and a new question thrust upon us as to what music really is in the economy of nature. Accustomed to regard it as a gist [sic], improved and perfected by cultivation and practice, we here find it perfectly developed in a blind negro boy, and constituting a part of his nature, as much so as the color of his skin.".

Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. 1st ed. 7p. 35 cm. Sheet music. Light soil and minor uneven browning. Unclear meaning or purpose of the small 5 printed within an eight pointed circle on front cover. One of his less common composition. The small sketch of Bethune occupying the center of the title-page on this piece of sheet music appears to have been drawn by A. Caloma. OCLC locates 2 copies (NYPL and U of Mich Lib.). The song is identified on the title-page as copyrighted by Elise Bethune, presumably Eliza Bethune, who after much litigation was awarded control of Tom in August, 1887. He remained with her for the rest of his life, last performing around 1904.

Añadir al carritoSheet Music. Condición: Very Good. This quite uncommon sheet music was the first published by the well-known "Blind Tom" Bethune. Bethune had been born blind and a slave near Columbus, Georgia. His unusual ability to play the piano and recall speech was discovered at an early age so that before he was ten he was touring the country and making vast sums of money for his owner, General James Neil Bethune and his manager, Perry Oliver, for whom "Oliver's Galop" is named. After the Civil War, Bethune was declared non compos mentis (more recent diagnoses have settled on autism) and put under the care of Gen. Bethune who continued to make money from Blind Tom's touring. He was quite likely the most well-known and best-compensated American musician of the 19th century, though most of his earnings went to Gen. Bethune. Besides being able to play almost any musical work or even sound he heard, Blind Tom could also remember long speeches and mimic the speakers sounds and mannerisms. He died in 1908. This sheet music has been removed from a bound volume and has stab holes and light residue along the spine. There is also some staining or foxing in the upper left corner and general age-toning throughout. The image of the young Tom is quite vivid. All six pages (counting covers) of "Oliver's Gallop" are present. This work was published simultaneously with "Virginia Polka" which had the same lithographed cover. Complete copies of this sheet music are rare. WorldCat locates fewer than ten copies in libraries though it is quite difficult to determine if any of these are the original publication or if they are complete. A copy, trimmed along the bottom edge and missing the last two pages, has recently been offered at auction with an estimate of over $1000. ; Lithographed Cover Image of Blind Tom Bethune; Folio 13" - 23" tall; 6 with covers pages.

Añadir al carritoSecond edition. 4to. 11 pp. Long introduction on the verso of the title page, the music with printed notes indicating stages of the battle. Thomas ("Blind Tom") Wiggins Bethune (1849-1908), an African-American autistic savant and musical prodigy, was born a slave on a plantation in Harris County, Georgia, near Columbus, and began his musical career at an early age on his master's piano. At eight, Tom was hired out to a promoter who toured him extensively in the United States, earning prodigious sums of money; his former master took him to Europe in 1866 for a successful tour there. A series of custodial battles and other problems essentially ended Blind Tom's career in the mid-1890s. "In the wave of euphoria after Manassas, Tom turned his hypersensitive ear into the music of the big-mouthed guns. He then framed these sounds with the South's triumphant version of events, before composing what many believed was his masterpiece Tom's impressionistic musical description of the battle pits the harmony of the right hand against the discord of the left. An insistent bass conjures the trudge of marching columns, tonal clusters evoke the roar of cannon and musketry. A brooding soundscape then ducks, weaves, and punches its way into a medley of popular and patriotic songs discord tugging at the heels of melody until it finally explodes into the chaos of a harem-scarem finale" (from Deidre O'Connell's "The Ballad of Blind Tom, Slave Pianist, America's Lost Genius"). The first edition of "The Battle of Manassas" was published in 1866 by Root & Cady in Chicago; this second edition, including a catalogue of other war related pieces of sheet music available from the publisher, was issued by Brainard's in 1884. Both editions are uncommon, in institutional holdings and in trade. Not in Dichter & Shapiro, Levy, or Wolf. OCLC locates 9 copies of the first edition and 8 for the one offered here (Yale, Columbus State, Allen County Public, Detroit Public, Michigan, Virginia, SE Illinois, Library of Virginia); it's unclear how many of those still retain the color illustrated front wrapper, but at least two include it. Spine with tape repairs, several marginal tears to interior leaves, one leaf with tape repairs not extending into text, old tidelines in upper margin of several leaves not extending into text, lower front wrapper chipped, a good copy of a scarce printing of Blind Tom's masterpiece. Original chromolithographic wrappers, illustrated with a Civil War battle scene by Goes & Quensel, Lith., Chicago. (8686).
