Bound in a brown leather-like cloth with blind stamping.This is a facsimile edition of the first edition printed in 1477, The Dic…tes and Sayings of the Philosophers is notable for being one of the very first books printed in England by William Caxton, thought to be the first person to introduce a printing press into England in 1476. This 1877 edition commemorates the 400th anniversary of that first printing. First edition, thus.This is a collection of moral and philosophical sayings in black and red type, from philosophers such as Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and others. Originally translated into French from Arabic sources, it was then translated into English by Anthony Woodville, Earl Rivers, a notable 15th-century nobleman. In the publisher's original cloth binding with blind stamping. Externally, smart. Rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to cloth at extremities. Chip to lower right corner of spine. Front joint slightly split 3 inches or so from tail and slightly at the head, slightly exposing binding materials. Endpapers age toned. Hinges slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean if a little age toned to perimeters. Previous owner's inscription to preface page. The odd spot heavier to first and last few leaves, with one or two spots to fore edge. Good. None Stated (ilustrador). book.
