Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No DJ as issued. 144 pages. From 2002 through 2005, Bertien van Manen traveled all over Europe visiting families and documenting their personal photographs, some selected from albums or hanging on walls, and others stashed in less obvious places around their lives. She col lected traces of war and suppression and of happiness and sadness , encompassing a century of history in these recorded--and here r e-recorded--meetings of human eyes, minds and hearts. Beyond its very basic appeal, the project seems to reassess van Manen's earl ier work--a career of more direct photojournalism including A Hun dred Summers, a Hundred Winters, on the people of the former Sovi et Union, and East Wind West Wind on the people China--and to mem orialize the paper print itself, in light of pervasive new digita l cameras and photo-enabled cell phones that make her work all th e more rare.

paperback. Condición: Perfetto (Mint). Prima edizione (First Edition). Poesia di Jòzsef Attila in inglese e ungherese. 65 fotografie in bianco e nero di Bertien Van Manen. Selezione e cura di Stephen Gill . Cm 21.5x23.8. pp. 112. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . Book.

Condición: Wie neu. Steidl, Göttingen, 2015. New, mint, unread; still originally shrink-wrapped in publisher`s plastic foil. Clothbound hardcover with dustjacket. 166 x 200 mm. 112 pages. 25 tritone plates. 89 black and white plates. Text in english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "Bertien van Manens blissful images of family holidays in den Eikenhorst (literally meaning Nest of Oak Trees) from the 1970s are the subject of her latest publication, Easter and Oak Trees. It was her son, one of the primary subjects in the series, who recently reminded van Manen of the archive. Lightness dominates these black and white images, and the obvious pleasure, family warmth and security of her children and family in the less politically correct `70s. Children pose, play and run but ultimately the photographs communicate the intimate comfort that comes with family, uninhibited in their expression and exposure to the camera. Easter and Oak Trees offers an enticing invitation to share a small part of this familial idyll. The images raise the question, could a photographer still do this in 2013? Could she photograph her children naked, footloose and carefree, acting up to the camera with fake cigarettes and a bottle of beer? Or is this spontaneity, this innocence, lost thanks to rancid affairs and small-minded moralism? Whilst this work is some of the earliest made by van Manen, it has all the qualities found in her mature work. `One recognizes the lyrical looseness, the sensuality and the melancholy but also a striving for balance and composition. Her photographs look like free, insouciant improvisations on themes, that later, in `a Hundred Summers a Hundred Winters` or in `East Wind West Wind` have taken shape in a more outspoken way". Hardcover. 235 x 225 mm. 112 pages. 78 color plates. Text in english. Perfect condition! Collector`s copy! "Spanning almost three decades, Moonshine is a portrait of the American Appalachian folk, a mythologised region populated by `moonshiners`. Van Manen`s images are defined by a fierce intimacy with her subject, as the viewer teeters on the edge of the frame, perpetually trespassing on private moments: rollicking children practicing handstands on the couch; a kneeling daughter combing the hair of her grandmother. Van Manen first visited the region in 1985, to the Appalachian areas of Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, returning periodically up until 2013 to visit mining families with whom she lived: the Boggs family with their ten red-haired sons; miners Mavis and Junior. The intergenerational images subtly trace the insidious changes undergone by Appalachia - the slow and steady demise of the mining industry, and the migration of inhabitants from ramshackle wooden cabins to the city, or urban trailer parks. Van Manen intermixes black-and-white images with later colour work - another register of time passing and the inevitability of change. Bertien van Manen rolled into photography almost by accident, taking pictures of her children with an old camera. As her work became more public she was soon drafted into the world of fashion photography. In 1977 she tired of the industry, and on discovering the documentary photography of Robert Frank and Josef Koudelka, van Manen began to explore the developing relationship between herself and her subjects, keeping a closeness and developing a personal, organic style of photography." I will be Wolf brings together many of these beautiful and never-before-seen images with the editorial direction of renowned British photographer Stephen Gill. Her snapshots of commuters, grocers, chemists, café workers, and street vendors contain all the hallmarks of a bygone era, before the grip of globalisation was able to make its mark on the country. Condición: Wie neu. Steidl, Göttingen, 2005. First edition, first printing. Signed by Bertien van Manen. Mint, new, unread; only opened for signature! Hardcover without dustjacket (as issued). With an essay by Juri Andruchowytsch. 144 pages, 72 colour plates. 170 x 220 mm. From 2002 through 2005, Bertien van Manen visited families all over Europe to take pictures of their private photographs. In doing so she collected traces of people's lives, of happiness and sadness, of war and suppression, and she encompassed a century of history, across differences in culture and the meeting of human minds and hearts. Van Manen took photographs of photos from family albums, of photos hanging on walls, and of photos simply present in people's lives. With the advances of digital or mobile-phone camera technology, this means of keeping private photos and retaining memories and histories is slowly disappearing. From 1990 Bertien van Manen travelled through the former Soviet Union to take photographs of people and families. The resulting book A Hundred Summers, a Hundred Winters was published in 1994. In 1997 she started a similar project in China. East Wind West Wind was then published in 2001. Van Manen received several prizes and awards, including a nomination for the City Bank Photography Prize in 2003. Her photographs are in the collections of Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, Centre National des Arts Plastiques, Paris, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Museum of Modern Art, New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Collection la Salle, Chicago.***************Steidl, Göttingen, 2005. China, for all its hospitality, can be an intensely private place. It is traditionally a country of walled cities, walled palaces, walled gardens, and walled family compounds. The family is still the basic unit that dominates most Chinese lives. Van Manen accomplished to penetrate those units and offers a candid insight into Chinese culture rarely seen in western photographers. The photos in this book have been made between 1991 and 2009 in Russia, Moldova, Kazachstan, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Tatarstan, Georgia. The editing and sequencing of the images have been done by Stephen Gill. The title of these series, 'Lets's sit down before we go', is a metaphor for the subject of the images. An old habit in Russia. Before leaving for a long journey, people sit down for a moment and think about where they will be going and why.
