Title with chip to upper corner repaired. 1/8-inch wormhole to first two leaves, catching a couple of letters on second leaf. First several leaves soiled and stained and with some light chipping to margins. Some very light and faded water-stains to a few pages, and a few mostly early ink marks, as well as some mostly marginal soiling or staining. Overall, a nice copy of this rare issue. USTC (No. 142822) locates only two copies worldwide - one at the British Library, and the other at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuttel, Germany. ~W~ [1.0P] Although the present book is no longer considered to be by Bernard of Clairvaux, it was in the 15th and 16th centuries a popular religious work. The printer and publisher Denis Roce came from Scotland to Paris where he was active in the book trade from 1490-1517. The figure of the dog in his device indicates alertness, while the rose tree is a pun on his name.

Writing between 1148-53, Bernard is considered with the fate of pope Eugenius's reign. "I look," he says to the new pope, "at the height and I fear a fall, I see the mouth of the abyss that lies beneath you." The papacy is filled with temptation: and although you have obtained a higher place, it is not a safer pace. The successor of the Apostles should not occupy himself in judging worldly affairs and disputes between the powerful he says. By contrast, it is your task is to defend the oppressed and the poor: "We cannot abandon the downtrodden; we cannot refuse judgment to those who suffer injustice".

With a contemporary manuscript ex-libris on the pen-ultimate page: ''desen boec hoert toe Lysbeth vande zype. With a later manuscript ex-libris on the first paste-down of Maria Conickx, nun at Leliendaal (near Mechelen). On the same page she states that she entered the convent on 1 august 1636 and was ordained on 24 januari 1638. Bound in somewhat later (17th c.) full vellum with overlapping edges, manuscript title on spine (and year of printing). Printed on strong paper in gothic type. Superb copy with no stains on the inside and only a few minor stains at the back cover. The binding nor the book show any signs of wear or use.The text is an early Dutch translation of the ''Vitis Mystica'' or the True Vine by Bernardus de Clairvaux** . Remarkably well preserved illustrated copy of this mystic text. It is a witness to the high degree of religeous sofistication arrived by in Dutch society: the book is published in the vernacular (Dutch). A few decades later all this was swept away upon the arrival of the Renaissance, Humanism (Erasmus) and the Religeous Wars. **Allthough traditionnally catalogued under the authorship of Bernardus; the work is now ascribed to Bonaventura.
