Als Luftbrückenpilot wurde er weltweit bekannt: Captain Jack O. Bennett. Seine Erinnerungen sind nicht nur ein zeitgeschichtliches Dokument, sie enthalten auch eine Fülle aufregender und amüsanter Begebenheiten über den Wolken. Jack O. Bennett, der Pilot mit den wohl meisten Flugstunden, der im Mai 1945 mit der ersten Nachkriegs-Transportmaschine, einer DC 4, aus New York kommend auf dem zerstörten Berliner Flughafen Tempelhof landete, erzählt aus seinem Leben. Es ist die Geschichte eines vom Fliegen Besessenen, der mit acht Jahren zum ersten Mal in einem Flugzeug saß, mit vierzehn fliegen lernte und schon wenig später selbst Flugunterricht erteilte. Der Arztsohn aus Pennsylvania studierte in den Jahren 1937/38 an der Technischen Hochschule in Berlin, lernte hier Hermann Göring, Ernst Udet u. a. kennen und durfte nach einer zweiwöchigen Grundausbildung in Rangsdorf sogar deutsche Maschinen ausprobieren (Messerschmitt 109, Heinkel, Focke-Wulf u. a.), obwohl Göring ihn für einen »Spion« hielt. Berlin wurde für Jack O. Bennett die »schönste Stadt der Welt«. Er verzichtete 1947 auf besser bezahlte Pan Am-Transatlantikflüge, um in der Stadt bleiben zu können, die er als erster Luftbrückenpilot auf rund tausend Flügen mit dem Lebensnotwendigsten versorgt hatte. - Als Panam-Pilot und dienstältester Flugkapitän im innerdeutschen Dienst hat Jack O. Bennett den Weg zwischen der Bundesrepublik und West-Berlin 23.232 mal zurückgelegt - ein Rekord, den vermutlich kein anderer Pilot mehr brechen kann. 397 p. Fotos.
