Añadir al carritoNo Binding. Condición: Very Good. In acid free mylar envelope. Transcription. Recto: "Say, kid! if that aint camouflage, ask me what is!" [Artist Signature:] D. TEMPEST [Douglas] The cartoon relies on the term "camouflage", which entered the English language from French during WWI, = concealing soldiers or hardware from the enemy by blending into the surroundings. The Scottish soldier struts in a hybrid uniform: a khaki service jacket paired with a colorful tartan kilt, checkered hose, and yellow boots. The young boys observe that his glaringly bright, un-camouflaged attire is the opposite of stealthy military concealment. Antisemitic angle: The soldier isn't a generic Scotsman, he is a caricature with a large curved nose to denote a Jew. Blending Scots and Jews stems from the shared stereotype of Scots and Jews as misers, preoccupied with money. In medieval Europe Christians restricted Jews to certain occupations such as moneylending, tax collecting and dealing in second hand clothes, and then despising them for doing so. The word "Camouflage" is doing double duty here: 1. The Literal Joke: the attire is the opposite of military concealment. 2. A caricature of a Jew trying to blend into the regiment by masquerading as a Scotsman. Verso: Postmark / Cancellation: Circular town postmark: RIPON / 1215 PM / NOV 1 / 18 [= November 1, 1918] Slogan cancellation bar: FEED THE GUNS WITH WAR BONDS Postage Stamp: Great Britain King George V One Penny (1d) red definitive stamp, cancelled by the Ripon postmark. "War Savings" slogan cancellation mark on the back, stamped just ten days before the November 11 Armistice. The FEED THE GUNS slogan by the British Post Office was used in October and November 1918. Recipient: Mrs. J. Williams Red Lion Inn Hatherton Cannock Staffs. (Staffordshire) Message: 8th [?] 41 [?] R. at C.D. south [?] Ripon "R. = Reception & Dispersal / CD = Command Depot (operations centered at the massive Ripon Army Camp complex in late 1918). "Dear Sister Just a few lines hoping too find you all at home in the best of health as I'm in the front & have arrived back quite safe. George X X X X" In the context of late 1918 military jargon, being "in the front" could mean being stationed at a forward depot area right before being processed back home. This fits with the timeline of late WWI troop movements. C.D. = By 1916, the British War Office established a network of specialized installations known as Command Depots. These were military convalescent camps designed specifically for rehabilitative training. Soldiers who were discharged from standard military hospitals but were not yet fit to return to the active fighting lines were sent to a Command Depot to undergo rigorous physical conditioning. The Ripon Command Depot (specifically No. 1 Infantry Command Depot at North Camp) was massive, built to hold up to 4,000 recovering men at a time. It is historically famous as the place where the legendary anti-war poet Wilfred Owen was sent to recuperate in the spring of 1918. As the war neared its end, Ripon Camp's infrastructure began pivoting toward handling the enormous influx of soldiers arriving back in Britain from continental Europe. When George wrote "R.D. with C.D. Fourth", he was indicating his administrative placement: he was attached to a Reception Depot operating alongside the Command Depot at the "Fourth" section or division of the camp complex. This lines up perfectly with his main text message where he happily states that he has "arrived back quite safe" from the front lines. The sequence 8th - 41 maps the inner administrative processing system of a camp running thousands of men through medical and discharge pipelines daily. 8th = 8th Company (or 8th Intake/Squadron) within that specific camp division. Large Command Depots routinely segregated men into numbered companies based on their medical fitness progression or their original regiments. 41 = the soldier's Billet, Hut, or Processing Number. Ripon Camp was a city of thousands . . . In Oct.1918 a Feed the Guns with War Bonds campaign began. Trafalgar Square was transformed into a simulated Western Front battlefield - with sandbagged trenches, ruined farmhouses, and captured German howitzers. War Bonds buyers were invited to walk up (ilustrador).…
