Early 19th-century glazed boards, top edges cut, others untrimmed. Bookplate removed from inside front cover, otherwise in excellent condition. SEE THE 34 IMAGES ON OUR WEBSITE. PHILOSOPHY PERSONIFIED AS A WOMAN; OUR COPY BEARS CONTEMPORARY ANNOTATIONS ON 130 PAGES (SEE IMAGES). HERE AN EARLY READER INGENIOUSLY PROVIDED A TEXTUAL APPARATUS TO IMPORTANT CONCEPTS IN A VERY CLEAR HUMANISTIC HAND. TO OUR KNOWLEDGE SUCH A KEY WAS NOT YET PRINTED UNTIL THE 1521 LYON EDITION OF JEAN MARION. Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy is a treatise on fortune, death, and a "higher power." It is structured as an imaginary dialogue between Boethius and Lady Philosophy. The work was written ca. 524-525 CE by the author while imprisoned -- and eventually executed -- by Theodoric the Great. The present edition, as most others, have two works printed together: Fols. 1-64: Boethius, Consolation of Philosophy (5 books); Fols. 65-80: De scholastica disciplina (6 chapters, wrongly attributed to Boethius). Even the printer, Filippo Giunta, was aware of this false attribution: in his dedication "To Studius Young Men," he writes "We publish for your use [.] this little work of Boethius, On the Consolation of Philosophy, carefully corrected [by Nicolaus Crescius] and printed with particular diligence. And so that we might further oblige you, we have also joined to it a small book on scholastic discipline, likewise attributed to Boethius, which we believe will be of no less benefit for all your studies, having been prepared and printed with equal care and effort. But since we see that many learned men are uncertain whether this latter work was truly written by Boethius, and suspect that IT MAY BELONG TO ANOTHER [emphasis ours] -- whose name, however, is unknown -- we therefore grant the reader the freedom to attribute it as he wishes, provided he acknowledges that no one up to now has treated this subject of discipline more fully or more learnedly. The present edition, first printed by Giunta in 1507, contains a very useful preface by editor, Nicolaus Crescius, who writes: "Through the injuries of time [the text has] become so corrupted that no trace of its original author?s style or refinement could be recognized. Over the years, it had suffered many wounds -- mutilated, confused, and altered in numerous places. It had also come into circulation in the hands of printers along with commentaries falsely attributed to Thomas Aquinas. Therefore, having been asked to correct this book of Boethius and restore it, as far as possible, to its original integrity, I undertook the task all the more willingly, since the subject matter is one that especially befits a religious man. [.] Accordingly, we now present this work, corrected with whatever care and diligence we could bring to it [so that] it may be more honorably printed and more safely made available to the public. In this way, it will be easier to judge how much this edition differs from earlier ones." TOGETHER WITH: Basilius Magnus, De liberalibus studiis ("On liberal studies"), translated from the Greek into Latin by Leonardo Bruni, printed by Giunta in 1516 (EDIT16 CNCE 4582). ? Renouard Annales XXXVII (Giunta), 43. Adams B-2287. EDIT16 CNCE 6544.

Tear in lower blank margin of leaf F5.Latin ed.: (8) ff., 212 (recte 208) pp.Binding: 17th century calf gilt, rebacked. Provenance: A few notes on fly-leaf. Editio princeps of the liturgy of St. James.A clean and fresh copy with ample margins. Of Morel's 69 books printed in Greek this is the only one in folio format. It's hard to imagine a page more beautiful than page 3.?A collection of old Greek liturgies according to the rites of St. James, Basilius Magnus, and Johannes Chrysostomos, suppplemented with evidence from a number of Greek Church Fathers, in Greek throughout, and also separately in Latin.? (Smitskamp, catalogue 641).The Latin edition has some additional texts not published in the Greek version: Nicolaus Cabasila, De divino altaris sacrificio (p. 117-157), Maximus Monachus, De ecclesiastica mystagogia (p. 157-174) and Cardinal Bessarion, De sacramento eucharistiae (p. 174-191). Furthermore a selection of texts of Chrysostomos made by Claudius de Sainctes, who also wrote the introduction to this Latin edition.?A very fine book [.] containing the magnificent liturgies of St. James, St. Basil, and St. Chrysostom, in Greek, with a Latin translation, was printed by Morel of Paris, in 1560, in one color, from the Royal Greek types, the rubrics in these Greek liturgies being distinguished by a small Greek character justified into the lines of text, and by a tiny italic in the Latin translation. A feature, also, of the Latin versions is the printing of the words Sacerdos, Diaconus, Populus, in spaced capitals, above the text, much as if they were speakers in a drama.? (D. B. Updike, Some notes on liturgical printing, in: The Dolphin, no. 2, 1935, p. 218.)?A beautiful folio [.] The edition of Morel has hitherto furnished the only printed text of the liturgy of S. James.? (Ch. A. Swainson, The Greek Liturgies ., London 1884, p. vi).
