Contains 254 printed pages of text with monochrome illustrations and photographs throughout. Fine condition book in Fine condition dust wrapper, not price clipped. English divine, author and social reformer (1806-82). Two pages, 16mo. Good, though lightly foxed, and with second leaf of bifoliate carrying traces of glue from previous mounting. Black-bordered, and bearing Paget's remarkably modernistic letterhead, made up of a pattern of his initials. 'Dear Sir | I do not know whether our doings here at our Village Festival are of a kind to interest you, but I take the liberty of assuring you that we shd. be very happy to see you, & any friends you might like to bring over.' Signed 'F. E. Paget'.

1p., landscape 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with strip of discoloration affecting Richardson's signature. The text concerns 'the numbers of the Madras Journal [which] have not yet turned up'. Accompanied by an unattrtibuted newspaper cutting of Richardson's obituary, laid down on a leaf removed from a notebook.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. She is responding to his 'kind wish, on the occasion of our last pleasant interview, that our intercourse might be Socially, if not professionally, renewed', by inviting him to dinner, in the hope that she may be 'so fortunate as to find you disengaged, & kindly disposed to favour me with your company'. Swanwick is associated with the foundation of both Somerville Hall, Oxford, and Girton College, Cambridge.

Written over the front of a 6 x 9.5 cm calling card of 'Mrs. Ormiston Chant, | 49, Gower Street, W.C.' In good condition, lightly aged. Eve has written his initials in red ink over the note. Reads: 'Dear Mr Eve | Please excuse Clement for being late this morning. We are starting for Grindewald, and are anxious for him to see us off at Charing Cross. 16mo. 1p. In fair condition, with slight traces of glue from mount. He has received Dyer's 'parcel p[er] Coach', and informs him that his party is 'expected at Mr. Fry's' on the following day. He is returning with the letter 'all the Books you first forwarded for Mrs Jacksons inspection'.

On both sides of the gilt-edged card, which is roughly 9 x 11.5 cm. Aged, but in fair condition. 'Mr Bosworth Smith' has informed her that her book 'Poets the Interpreters of Their Age' (1892) 'will be acceptable to the pupils of Harrow School', and she has 'great pleasure in presenting a copy to your library, & hoping that a kind welcome will be accorded to my little offering'. A postscript explains that the volume 'will be forwarded by an early post'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The male recipient is not named. The year has been added in another hand at the head of the first page. She will be 'pleased to speak at your proposed meeting if possible'. She a question regarding the timing of the meeting, which would have to be in 'the week beginning Jan. 29 to suit me'. She gives a number of dates and times when she has 'engagements in London', concluding: 'If you can fix the meeting so as to make it possible for me to keep these engagements I will come'.

Condición: Fine. January, 1960., 1960. Fine. - Mark Van Doren's 99-word poem "Say Which" penned by him on 6 inch high by 4 inch wide light tan paper. "This afternoon I think I'll pile / The apple wood that David split; / Or rake and sweep the dirt floor." Dated and signed with his initials "M.V.D." by the poet. Fine. Mark Van Doren's poem "Say Which" was published in the January 1960 issue of Harper's Magazine.

Tilton is best remembered for his accusations in the Beecher/Tilton Scandal.

2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed to 'B. Nicholson, Esq., | Brooks's, | St. James's Street, S.W.1.' (Nicholson was the son of Harold Nicholson and Vita Sackville-West.) She begins by thanking him for his 'kind letter and charming gift of your drawings of St. Nectaire', adding: 'as an author my vanity is flattered by your appreciation of "Romanesque France"'. She is glad she has helped 'a certain number of people in getting to know some of the beauties of France', but feels 'something of a fraud about the book as without the help of my friend Mr. Tyler I could never have written it'. It made her 'quite homesick to look at a picture of St. Nectaire again', and she is hopes 'the beautiful churches of France [] have not suffered too much at the hands of the German barbarians. I feel particularly anxious about Chartres and I pray they had the sense to remove the glass when hostilities began'. Unlike Nicholson, and as much as she loves 'the by-ways of France', it will cost her 'a great effort to go there again. I have always defended France and loved her, but her conduct during the present war and her betrayal of the Allied cause will make it difficult for me at least to go back to the country on the old happy terms.'.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded for postage. Smiles names the recipient as 'P. V. de Montgomery Esq' and signs the letter 'S Smiles'. He thanks him for 'the shawl, which has duly come to hand', continuing, 'We reached town last night, after a very pleasant ten days trip, not the least pleasant part of which was our very delightful visit to Rydal Mount'. He is sending a copy of 'the last Edition of Stephenson [his biography of Robert Stephenson] for Mrs Montgomery. It is not a lady's book, yet she may possibly be interested by it'. He ends with the news that he will be sending a copy of 'Self-Help', 'when the new edition, now passing through the press, has been printed'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. In original stamped and postmarked envelope, addressed by Smiles. The 'last photographic likeness' of Smiles 'was taken by Mr S. A. Walker, 230 Regent Street W'. Smiles has 'no doubt' that Walker will let Bacon 'have a copy' (i.e. Bacon will not be getting a free copy from Smiles). Smiles's book 'Physical Education' was 'published by me no less than 44 years ago. It had a small sale, and is now quite out of print. Though pretty good at the time, there are now far better works on the subject.'.

South-Eastern Railway secretary, social reformer, author ((1812-1904). Two pages, 8vo. He is presenting one of his books, presumably the "Life of George Stephenson" which was published in July of that year: "The book has been written under great disadvantage, - and has been scraped together as it were out of the scraps & odd bits of my lesser moments. But such as it is I hope it will afford you some pleasure to read." Smiles wrote "Self-Help" among other significant books.

Four pages, 12mo, , bifolium, minor staing on 'spine', text clear and in good condition. Text: "I hope you will not think me an abnormally business-like member of my sex when I tell you that I am absolutely incapable of writing an article without knowing beforehand that I am to be properly remunerated providing I do my work satisfactorily! Such is my unlucky constitution; & I find I cannot begin the article on Geo. Eliot for 'Time', till the important question of [?] terms is satisfactorily dealt with. May I beg you therefore to send me the enclosed [not present; contract?] at once? If I get an answer by Tuesday, I can begin on that day. | If I am to go on, would it not be worth while to send a par. [paragraph?] to the Athenaeum [underlined] 'gossip' - 'Mrs F.M. will treat Geo. Eliot's Life in the next number of 'Time'.' You will have seen that the reviewers in most of the Monthlies are thus [accustomed?] [the?] last & this week. " See Image. Note: "In early October, 1888, she wrote to the London Daily News to make the point that, as horrible and as depraved the Jack the Ripper murders might be, they were, in a way, the fault of society at large, and of the courts in particular, for taking such a lenient view of violence towards women." ["Jack the Ripper Tour"].

Three pages, 8vo, fold marks, small closed tear on fold, sl. dingy, but clear and complete. She couldn't reply quickly to her correspondent's "clever & interesting letter" because she was ill "and indeed doubted whether I should write any more to anybody. I have since read it to many members of Parl[iamen]t and you , who are so humble, should have heard how reespectful & attentive the were to my 'Jamaica correspondent' - THere have been debates on West Indian subjects, which made your letter really (even to strangers) extremely interesting: - to me it was a great treat. " She then discusses the efefects of her illness ("nervous attack"). "I sent my dear Fletcher [ her son] to Lisbon, having got him an attache ship there. It is of course far better for his spirits & prospects that he should go, rather to embark in a profession, than as an invalid [tubercular]. He has kind friends in Sir H & L[ad]y Seymour there - but parting from hi was agreat sorrow, & knocked me down flat [underlined]. | How is your brother? Is he come back. I am sure [underlined] always to be in from two till four [phrase underlined] if you are not so early - I shall be glad to see you & Henry. | Can you dine on Sunday? Let me know soon by post. Constance Graham is come out & is much admired - very graceful & sings very prettily." She sends love to "Henry".

One page, 19 x 12cm, ink faded but legible, damage (couple of small holes) to left edge with loss of a letter or three. "Dear Friend | Please to send my Liberator [anti-slavery periodical] & non-Resistant hereafter to my brother's office 27 State St instead of by mail. You would oblige me if you would send thither any letters, papers &c which may be left for me at the A.S. Office. I have established a daily channel of comemoration so that I shall regularly receive whatever is sent. [My] brother's office is so near the Post Office that it cannot be much trouble to send things there. If my Liberator ciould be sent thither on Thursday, I should receive it a day sooner - but do not wish any specail trouble to be taken about it [.]". See Image.
