"This monograph has been prepared for the Nature Conservany Council by the Wildfowl Trust. It presents a complete survey of the distribution and habitats of the wild ducks, geese and swans belonging to the world-wide family of Anatidae which winter in England, Scotland and Wales. The survey is the result of an unprecedented coordinated effort by amateur and professional ornithologists over many years in wildfowl counting and ringing. The results are analysed and presented on a regional basis and are also summarised species by species with maps showing the most important concentrations. Besides their general value, these summaries indicate which species require special protection and where. A description of the wider migrations of the birds, as well as that of their movements within Britain, is also included and an explanation of various catching techniques is given. With supporting studies on the problems of the control of wildfowl stocks, the impact on wildfowl distribution of artificial habitats, and the relation of wildfowl to agriculture, the Monograph reveals a provisional scientific basis for a national policy of wildfowl conservation. It contains many colour illustrations and line-drawings by Peter Scott as well as numerous photographs and diagrams." .
