It is a working assumption of this paper that, in general, folk-illness phenomena are indeed amenable to such investigation if one is aware of especial methodological problems which are concomitants of such research. A presentation of some of these general problems is followed by an examination of the Hispanic-American folk illness which I refer to as susto.
