Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, but printed in the USA. With an 18 page Foreword by Tom Wolfe. ***Very good in yellow cloth-covered boards, with black titles to the spine. The boards are quite clean - only slightly marked from age and handling. No serious bumps or creases - just slight creasing to the head and tail of the spine. Corners sharp. Slight rubbing to the edges. Top edge of page block dusty and foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally near fine with no inscriptions and clean pages. No foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £2.95 net (crossed out in ink). The dustwrapper is complete, without any chips, but there is some slight loss and creasing to the top and tail of the spine, and rubbing, wear, small nicks and creasing to the top edges of the front and back panels. Slight fading to the pink colour of the titles on the spine. Dustwrapper otherwise bright. ***314 pages including a detailed section of Notes, Select Bibliography and Index at the back of the book. 224mm x 147mm. ***Contents: Introduction, Reply to James A. Wechsler, 1/ "America Is a Fascist Country", 2/ "America Means Genocide", 3/ "The Bomber Left Is a Moral Force", 4/ "The American Worker Is a Honky", 5/ "Our Political System Is a Fraud", 6/ "American Values Are Materialistic", 7/ "America Is Insane", 8/ "The American People Are Guilty", 9/ "America Needs a Violent Revolution", Notes, Select Bibliography, Index. ***'How much "gloom and doom" can a thoughtful, critical American take? Arnold Beichman, like many of us, has been prepared to listen and to read, to pay attention to all the criticisms of the U.S.A., past, present and future -- Amerika, as the way-out prophets call it -- as the furious indictment mounted in self-hatred. But enough is enough. In this book, which is likely to be one of the most controversial of the year, Arnold Beichman hits back at that whole school of dark prophecy, and he takes on both its intellectual and hippie spokesmen who see nothing but evil in American history, nothing but corruption and ruin ahead.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***"There is a hierarchy of deceptions. Near the bottom of the ladder is journalism; a steady stream of irresponsible distortions that most people find refreshing although on the morning after, or at least within a week, it will be stale and flat. On a higher level we find fictions that men eagerly believe, regardless of the evidence, because they gratify some wish. Near the top of the ladder we encounter curious mixtures of untruth and truth that exert a lasting fascination on the intellectual community". (Walter Kaufmann, "I and You, a Prologue." in I and Thou, by Martin Buber, 1971.) ***A first UK edition in very good condition - a topical work on the nature of political criticism of the USA. Interestingly, published in the same year as the Watergate Scandal! ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
