È stato uno fra i primi studiosi di diritto criminale a voler abolire la pena di morte in Europa. FRANCESCO CARRARA è senza dubbio la più elevata espressione della scienza penalistica italiana dell'Ottocento e il Suo pensiero è ancora vivo in Italia come in altre Nazioni, da quelle europee a quelle della lontana America Latina. Nel primo centenario della Sua morte, questo Convegno, che si svolge tra Lucca, Sua città natale, e Pisa, sede dal 1859 della Sua cattedra universitaria, in un contesto storico agitato da problemi di riforme in campo penale e, quindi, più che mai bisognoso di riscoprire i fondamenti del proprio di venire ed il significato della propria tradizione, vuole non solo rendere onore alla memoria del Maestro, ma proporsi come momento di riflessione critica sulla multiforme e sconfinata Sua opera, per trarne una sintesi valida sia come contributo per la scienza e la storia del diritto sia come ausilio per ogni legislatore provvido.
