The wraps are in good condition (some edge chipping at bottom of one cover; slight discoloring along spine). Saddle-stapled. 8 x 5 ½, 64 pages, 10 ounces XX [From the text] At the time this booklet was first published [1969], one of our fears was that during the assimilation of the Cunas into the mainstream of Panamanian culture, the art form represented by the Cuna mola would undergo drastic change, or perhaps disappear. We felt a need to document the mola at that particular stage of its evolution having noted that, over a period of time, the old methods used in producing the needlecraft were giving way to the new. Now we can say that the change, both in quality and design, has been somewhat radical, and even we who were aware that it was occurring could not have predicted how rapidly the change would come with the introduction of organized commercialism. The sudden equating of mola art with monetary value has often influenced production at the expense of what many consider a superior form of folk art. While these values are admittedly relative, we feel that the classic period of the mola has passed. Shortcuts used in production can be seen when comparing the mola in its present form with those associated with earlier periods. While the designs of older molas are generally considered to be symbolic of Cuna life, the trend towards introducing new forms which are pleasing to the buyer can now often be identified. Needlework has given way to the sewing machine with increasing frequency, and this, too, has had its effect on the Cuna woman?s craft.
