Añadir al carritoCommemorative broadside printed on crepe in black, red & blue, with central text panel announcing launch, within royal border of flags & crowns with the heads of the monarchs, challenger (& his wife?); somewhat creased at edges & along folds, some 'running' of colours, but generally a remarkable survival of an extremely ephemera…l piece. 'Sir Thomas Lipton's new yacht, Shamrock IV, will be launched from Messrs. Camper & Nicholson's yard at Gosport. As she has been built with. a great deal of secrecy, little or nothing is known about her 'lines'.' In fact this first of four challengers designed and built by Charles E. Nicholson was nicknamed 'ugly duckling' for its unconventional appearance. The intervention of the Great War delayed Shamrock's challenge until 1920 when she won the first two races against New York Yacht Club defender, Resolute, but lost the remaining three and thereby the challenge. Añadir al carritoBroadsheet cartoon, 40.2 x 28 cm (sheet size), slight edge browning but in very good condition. Satirical cartoon by Charles Green Bush, a pioneer of the daily newspaper cartoon. Here, the two figures, Jonathan (Uncle Sam) and Sandy (the kilted Scotsman) tussle over the America's Cup. The two yachts Thistle (Scotland) and the de…fending American yacht Volunteer contested the seventh America's Cup in 1887. "Sandy" was vanquished. The note by Harper's Weekly (included in photocopy) opines: ".the genius of America stands impeturbed and undoubting, and .the genius of Scotland looks rather unpleasantly determined and competent.". Despite the loss, Thistle went on to a successful racing career, and was eventually sold to Kaiser Wilhelm II. The New York Yacht Club remained supreme as the holder of the America's Cup until 1983, when the Royal Perth Yacht Club's challenger, Australia II famously was the victor.
