We find no record of Sam Wood and Stallings collaborating on any film during this time period. Sam Wood (1883-1949), born July 10, 1883, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died September 22, 1949, Hollywood, California; American director, in business before becoming assistant to Cecil B. De Mille in 1915. Directing from 1920. "A Night at the Opera" 1935; "A Day at the Races" 1937; "Gone With The Wind" 1939 (assisting Victor Fleming); "Goodbye Mr. Chips" 1939; "Kitty Folye" 1940; "Pride of the Yankees" 1942; "Kings Row" 1942; and "For Whom the Bell Tolls" 1943. Sam Wood directed 11 actors in Oscar-nominated performances: Robert Donat, Greer Garson, Martha Scott, Ginger Rogers, Charles Coburn, Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Katina Paxinou, Akim Tamiroff, Ingrid Bergman and Flora Robson. Donat, Paxinou and Rogers won Oscars for their performances in one of Wood's films. Laurence Stallings (1894-1968), born November 25, 1894, Macon, Georgia; died Feburary 28, 1968, Pacific Palisades, California; author and screenwriter; films include: "The Big Parade" 1925; "What Price Glory" 1926; "Old Ironsides" 1926; "Show People" 1928; "Marianne" 1929; "Billy the Kid" 1930; "Way for a Sailor" 1930 with director Sam Wood; "A Farewell to Arms" 1932; "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" 1935; "So Red the Rose" 1935; "Stand Up and Fight" 1939; "Northwest Passage" 1940; "Jungle Book" 1942; "Salome, Where She Danced" 1945; "Christmas Eve" 1947; "3 Godfathers" 1948; "What Price Glory" 1952; "A Farewell to Arms" 1957 TV; Stallings was a Marine Captain who lost his leg fighting in WWI, and wrote "What Price Glory" about his deep anti-war feelings.
