Known for his sober and elegant style, Uninsky was born in Kiev and studied in Kiev at the conservatory along with Vladimir Horowitz before moving to Paris to continue his studies. He won the 2nd International Chopin Piano Competition in 1932 and subsequently became known for his Chopin interpretations and recordings. Alexander Uninsky eventually made his way to North America where he taught at the Toronto Conservatory of Music beginning in 1955 and then later at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he died. Uninsky writes in his tribute; "To Mr Theodore E. Steinway, my warmest congratulations and best wishes of prosperity and continuing success.
