Inside this book when I purchased it are two of the artist's cards. The cards contain his Hebrew name and then underneath Eugene Abeshaus, Painter, is printed. Below that, someone, perhaps the artist, penned his name (Evgeny Abezgauz) on both cards (not in script). There is no date on either card. Below his penned name is printed his address and telephone number and fax number and work and personal email address. On the backside of one of the cards is penned '$15000-20000.' Obviously the cards will be part of the sale and I've taken a photo of them. The book is in excellent condition. You can see the covers in the photos. There is a thin scratch on the rear cover. There isn't any other wear. wear that needs to be called out. The page edges are very clean. The book is square and the spine is straight. The binding is very solid with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are in excellent condition. I don't see any soiling. I don't see any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The illustrations are all in color. The colors are vivid. One illustration is a foldout (no crease). You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I've always had it in a fitted protective cover. I've just removed it to better examine the jacket and will replace it with a new one after the photos are scanned. There are no tears. There is a tiny crinkle down a bit from the front covers top edge. The jacket is very clean. There's a bit of that white clouding you get on dark surfaces on the rear cover. The very large flaps have only 'Palace Editions' printed (front flap). The only wear I see is a tiny scuff just off the middle edge on the rear flap. 'Eugene Abeshaus (also spelled Evgeny Abezgauz (1939-2008) was a Jewish artist who worked in the USSR and Israel. Born in Leningrad to a typical intelligentsia family, Abeshaus was educated as an electrical engineer but soon abandoned this career and enrolled in the Mukhina School for Applied Art. By the time of his graduation he had already developed a critical stance towards the official Soviet art dominated by the Communist ideology and began exhibiting at semi-underground exhibitions. This was culminated by his taking part in a famous 1975 exhibition at the Nevsky Palace of Culture. Abeshaus was fired from his job and censured by the official press. Soon afterwards he set up, together with several Jewish artists, the Alef Group and became its leader. The group's first exhibition in November 1975 was held at Abeshauses' small apartment. According to the Alef Manifesto written by Alec Rappoport, "We are trying to conquer the influence of small-town Jewish art and find sources for our work in deeper, wiser, and more spiritual European culture, and from it build a bridge to today and tomorrow'. In May 1976, some of Abeshaus's works, clandestinely sneaked out of the country, were exhibited at the Berkeley Art Museum to much critical acclaim. Later in the same year, following some political bargain between Leonid Brezhnev and President Jimmy Carter, Abeshaus and his family were finally permitted to leave the USSR for Israel. Since then Abeshaus lived and worked in Ein Hod, a picturesque artists' village near Haifa founded by Marcel Janco. His works were exhibited at numerous exhibitions, including dozens of one-artist shows, in Israel, the United States, Europe and, after the collapse of the USSR, Russia. His ultimate acceptance and recognition there was culminated in a sensational memorial one-artist exhibition staged in 2009 at the famous Russian Museum in St. Petersburg-- an exceptional honor for a modern artist.'.
