Provenance: Holbrook Illustrated with a wood engraved frontispiece and 31 wood-engraved plates by Whymper et al. after Rahden Saleb et al., with tissue guards, 2 folding engraved maps by Edward Weller, letterpress tables in the text. Tall, thick 8vo (221 x 140mm), handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, the spine with raised bands gilt stopped, the compartments fully gilt decorated with panel decorations and central ornamental devices, green morocco lettering label gilt in one compartment, marbled end-leaves, all edges marbled. 553, [1 blank] pp. A fine copy, clean and tight and strong, the plates and text-block in excellent state, a beautifully preserved copy. A SUPERIOR COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK ON THE EAST INDIAN ARCHIPELAGO. Formerly a student of Louis Agassiz' at the Lawrence Scientific School at Harvard, Bickmore initially traveled to Batavia in 1865, 'to re-collect the shells figured in Rumphius's "Rariteit Kamer"' (p. [5]), but the generosity of the Dutch Governor-General allowed him to explore far more extensively than he had hoped. The resulting narrative provides an excellent account of the islands of Java, Celebes, Timor, Ceram, Sumatra, and Singapore, and other minor islands visited en route. In his 'Address to the Royal Geographical Society' on 24 May 1860, Sir Roderick Murchison noted that Bickmore lectured to the Society while in London on his return journey from the Malay Archipelago to the United States, and this work was first published in London by John Murray in 1868; Murchison judged that, 'Besides the talent of desribing, in a clear and entertaining manner, the people and their customs, particularly as regards Sumatra, of which region we had previously very little knowledge, Mr. Bickmore has really great merit as a naturalist; the chief object of his voyage having been to collect the rare shells of Amboina, first figured and described by Rumphius--adding considerably to the number of species, and so enriching the museums of his native land that his countrymen have most properly rewarded him by making him Professor in one of their Universities. He has also received an important post in connection with the proposed new State Museum of New York [which would become the American Museum of Natural History], towards which the Legislature has lately voted a large sum of money, and which is to occupy one of the best positions in the city, at the Central Park [.] Besides [.] many other descriptions of the people for the general reader, the geologist will find much to interest him in Professor Bickmore's account of some of the phenomena of that region of earthquakes and volcanoes' (Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society XIII, p. 290). Albert Smith Bickmore (1839 1914) is now referred to as the originator of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. He was an instrumental force as one of its founders. His preface states as noted above, "The object of my voyage to Amboina was simply to re-collect the shells figured in Rumphius's 'Rari-teit Kamer,' and the idea of writing a volume of travels was not seriously entertained until I arrived at Batavia, and, instead of being forbidden by the Dutch Government to proceed to the Spice Islands, as some of my warmest friends feared, I was honored by His Excellency, the Governor-General of 'the Netherlands India,'." His expedition in the East Indian Archipelago covered April 1865 to May 1866. He arrived at Batavia on 30 April 1865 on the Memnon a Sear's clipper ship, Captain Freeman, out of Boston.[.

Besides the flora and fauna he also devoted a great deal of attention to the physical geography and the population. The concept of a Western and Eastern division between the Indonesian peoples was initiated by him. Batavia, Semarang, Surabaya, Celebes, the Moluccas, Sumatra and Singapore were visited.
