Original French petite (small) poster for the 1960 film. Set during WWII, Candide (Cassell) is an orphaned Westphalian who falls in love with the baron's daughter, Cunegonde (Lavi), and is thrown out of the house when the baron discovers them kissing. Candide is drafted and captured by the Nazis, but escapes and joins the International Red Cross. His improbable adventures take himto the revolutions of South America, the tribes of Borneo, Moscow, and to racially charged New York. 16 x 27 inches, folded once as issued. Good, with edge tears, creases, and chips, light foxing. Scarce.

Complete, rebound: 18p. + all ten plates (advertisements for a quinine apertif) are in good shape; presswork is color-lithography. An irresistable look-see on the part of non-buyers evidently destroyed the original binding; every leaf whether text or plate has been provided with inch-wide strips of old document tape at the gutter, recto and verso, and sewn together. None of the graphics are touched, but the tapings come close. Titlepage, a sort of eleventh color graphic, has suffered damage: the face of "Albert" is smudged. Leaves are held by relatively recent threads, exposed here and there. The casing is original but was obviously fiddled-with. Color-decorated covers are soiled and stained although the gray-green buckram backstrip looks clean (buckram is tough!) and newish ribbon-ties have been inserted in place of the old disappeared ones. Value of item possibly lies in the caricatures of the ten featured actresses, should the reader be versed in fin de siecle French stage matters. In short, a reasonably okay copy.

First Edition. 17.3 x 20 cm card chemise with illustrations to the front and rear and original ties, containing a 20pp advertising pamphlet produced for Quina-Laroche (a medicinal drink) with testimonials from 10 actresses concerning its efficacy. Also contained within the chemise are 10 colour plates of the actresses by de losques. Rubbing to spine and edges of the chemise and some toning and marking with a couple of scuffs on the rear board. Internally, the loose colour plates are clean and bright and the text pages have just a little uniform toning although the cotton that tied them to the chemise has perished.
