Hardcover. PAIR OF REPRODUCTION PRINTS. The originals were drawn by Henry Alken and engraved by I Clark. Framed and glazed in a wood frame, gilt, with a bevelled mount ruled in gold. Mount window 205 x 150 mm; overall size including frame 340 x 285 mm. 34 x 28.5 cm.

Hand colored aquatint paper size is 22 5/8" x 15". Image size is 10 3/4" X 8 1/2". Plate mark measures 12" x 10". "C. Bentley sculpt." at lower right. "H. Alken delt." at lower left. Central text beneath the image missing part of title and publisher's imprint.Walpole Library, Yale: In the center of a book-lined room the bookseller, with a pen behind his ear, his hands in his pockets, glasses pushed to the top of his head, stands looking down disdainfully at a manuscript being offered to him by a thin, timid looking man who stands nervously with his hat tucked under his arm. A clergyman with spectacles, his back to the two other gentlemen, perusing the shelves, stops to examine a volume. In the left foreground on the floor, in front of a library step stool, is a pile of books. Another pile of books lies in the right foreground in front of a door with a glass panel and curtains in the top half. To the left of the door is a sloping writing table with paper, ink stand, and pen.From the collection of Frederic Gale Ruffner, Jr., the founder of Gale Research, Detroit.

According to Siltzer the series was completed with eight plates (each with four images): one on racing, three on hunting, one on steeple-chasing and one on coursing. Henry Thomas Alken was born into what became an artistic dynasty. He studied under the miniature painter J.T. Barber and exhibited his first picture (a miniature portrait) at the Royal Academy when he was sixteen. From about 1816 onwards he "produced an unending stream of paintings, drawings and engravings of every type of field and other sporting activity. He is best remembered for his hunting prints, many of which he engraved himself until the late 1830s. To many, sporting art is 'Alken', and to describe his work or ability is quite unnecessary."
