Bellissima tavola, tratta da "Piscium vivae icones", [Antwerpen, 1610 ca.]. In primo piano 4 varietà di pesci. Adriaen Collaert fu autore di numerosissime serie, tra le quali quelle più famose sono dedicate alla Vita di Cristo e ai Mesi dell'anno (derivate da opere di altri incisori), incide anche, su suo disegno, diverse serie ad argomento naturalistico, tra le quali quella in analisi (originariamente composta da 25 incisioni). Serie di 25 incisioni originali, firmate nella parte inferiore del rame "Adr. Collaert fecit et exc."  numerate 1-25 in basso a sinistra ed 1 titolo allegorico non numerato.Prima edizione di questa famosa raccolta d'incisioni di pesci,  balene, tartarughe, testuggini, molluschi, crostacei e coccodrilli.  Adriaen Collaert raggruppa la fauna marina in gruppi simili, fornendo a ciascun elemento il suo nome scientifico. Il paesaggio sullo sfondo è tratto dalle vedute montuose e dagli edifici dipinti da Pieter Brueghel il Vecchio. Le conchiglie sparse in primo piano non sono identificate con un nome, nonostante siano fedelmente riprodotte svolgono un ruolo meramente decorativo. Alla fine del XVI secolo, la storia naturale era basata sull'osservazione diretta e la rappresentazione della natura svolgeva un ruolo essenziale nello sviluppo del metodo scientifico. Collaert, Adrian (1560-1618)nato ad Anversa da una famiglia di incisori fiamminghi. Figlio di Hans (o Jan) Collaert I, sposato con Justa figlia del noto incisore ed editore di Anversa Philips Galle, divenne un abile e assiduo collaboratore del suocero. A SMALL-FORMAT PASSION, CA. 1595. 24 numbered engraved plates, including title-page, bound with an additional 8 non-integral unnumbered plates on the same theme. 8vo. [14.7 x 9.9 cm]; engravings 85 x 65 mm to platemarks. Bound in 18th century or very early 19th century diagonally-blind-ruled calf; spine leather perished but stitching holding perfectly. Early pagination in upper right corner throughout (evidently extracted from a Sammelband); a neat, clean copy save for the final leaf, which shows an ink spill affecting a few cm on final plate of the second series. Charming, complete copy of this rare, small-format suite illustrating the Passion and Resurrection according to Adriaen Collaert (1560-1618). Some, but not all copies contain the additional 8 plates bound at the rear here, illustrating specific scenes from the Gospels indicated in their captions. The captions of the main series, however, draw on or paraphrase passages from the Psalms. Judging by the spattering of yellow paint on the verso of the penultimate plate, and the black ink spill on the corner of the final plate, we suspect that the present volume was used as an artists' model book one of two generally-accepted purposes for such suites, alongside private devotion. Vellum a little grubby and with a couple of small ink stains, corners slightly bumped, tiny chips gone at spine ends, a couple of quires a bit proud, but the binding solid and retaining much of its original antique appeal. Occasional minor soiling internally, isolated spots of foxing or trivial paper flaws, but the text and plates otherwise very appealing, the impressions of the engravings being especially rich. Written by a Walloon theologian and illustrated by an Antwerp master printer, this is a very rare treatise on martyrs of the Augustinian order that was once in the library of an order of teaching nuns. These 27 hagiographies of Augustinian hermits who died for the faith were written by theologian Georges Maigret (1573-1633), prior of the Augustinian monastery in Li?ge. He begins with St. Evode, martyred in Africa in 408, and continues up to 1610, when Blessed Illephonse and Raphael de la Madre de Dios were killed while on missions in the Philippines and Sunda Islands, respectively. Other near-contemporary martyrs died closer to home, like Brother Gerard Ridder, who was murdered by the Huguenots in the Low Countries in 1587. A full-length portrait by Adriaen Collaert illustrates the entry for each martyr, with detailed background scenery giving a sense of where these Augustinians were serving at the time of their demise. Some martyrs are shown in the midst of their execution: Boniface hangs on an X-shaped cross, Philippe Aymil stands pierced through with arrows, Augustin du Rosaire kneels calmly before the swordsman who will behead him. The death of others is represented allegorically, as in the case of Jean Sahagoune, who was poisoned: he is depicted standing atop a recumbent lion, while a richly dressed woman offers him a chalice containing a snake. Collaert (ca. 1560-1618) came from a family of prominent Flemish engravers in Antwerp. After training with his father Hans, he became a master of the artists' Guild of St. Luke in 1580. Our volume was once owned by the Congregation of Notre Dame in Trier, an order of Augustinian Canonesses dedicated to educating the daughters of the poor. The order was founded in northeastern France in 1597, and soon spread to surrounding areas. Of special interest, the printing of our volume was authorized by the signature of Jean Chapeauville, vicar general of Liege and Inquisitor of the Faith. As a reformer, historian, and theologian, Chapeauville (1551-1617) was a person of considerable prominence in the church of his time. To qualify for personal manuscript authorization like this, the work must have had quite a small print run, and copies would have additionally been destroyed through devout use. In any case, the book is almost never seen for sale today.
