Overall, in very good condition. Adela Curtis (1864-1960) was the leader of a group known informally as the 'White Ladies' Curtis was a Christian, vegetarian teetotaller, pioneer of self-sufficiency and a keen organic gardener. She was born in Japan and came to England in 1868. Although a committed Christian she was influenced by the American New Thought movement and Eastern religions. Around 1907 she established her first spiritual centre, the school of Silence in Kensington, London, and later the Order of Silence Centre in Coldash, Berkshire, a utopian self-sufficient farm and children's school. In May 1921 Adela Curtis retired to Burton Bradstock to recuperate from an illness. She purchased 17 acres from the Pitt-Rivers estate to establish a spiritual centre. She was joined by former students from London and Coldash. They were styled 'nuns' and became known locally as the White Ladies as they wore white habits. They lead a simple life as the community of Christian Contemplatives - there are memorial plaques in the chapel at Othona, West Dorset.
