Les jeunes chinois les accueillent, les entourent. Ce ne sont pas encore des confidences, mais un début de connivence. Et puis c'est l'explosion : un beau matin de novembre 1978, le mur des Xidan, en plein centre de la capitale, se couvre de "dazibaos", ces affiches anonymes qui racontent les souffrances endurées, expriment les revendications et les espoirs de tout un peuple. De témoin fasciné, Fraser se transformera un jour en acteur, placardant son propre dazibao, haranguant, à leur demande, des milliers de personnes qui n'ont plus peur de parler et demandent à ce journaliste de leur "expliquer" l'Occident. Fait inouï, dont la presse du monde entier se fera l'écho. A dater de ce moment, tout a changé pour les Fraser. Ils ont reçu et été reçus chez des amis chinois, chose impensable auparavant ; désormais ils vont voir vivre les Chinois "de l'intérieur". Et même lorsque, courant 1979, les autorités mettront fin brutalement à cette courte période de libéralisme, les échanges entre John et ses amis continueront. Grâce à ses rapports privilégiés, à ses dons d'observateur chaleureux et plein d'humour, John Fraser a écrit un merveilleux reportage.
