8°. 265(1) S., 1 Bl. Illustrierter Opbd. Widmung auf Vorsatz. Rücken an den Kapitalen, ganz minimal bestossen. Innen durchgehend papierbedingt etwas gebräunt. Insgesamt durchaus aber durchaus gutes Exemplar. Erste Buchausgabe. WG 40. Das Buch wurde aber erst 1948 ausgeliefert, da der Verfasser 1944 verhaftet wurde. Der Arzt und Schriftsteller (1884-1945), ist mit vielen seiner Werke eher nahe der Trivialliteratur anzusiedeln. Zunächst zu den Vertretern der konservativen Revolution zu zählen, legte er 1933 wie andere auch Hoffnungen in den entstehenden NS-Staat, zählte aber spätestens nach 1936 zu dessen entschiedenen Gegnern und zur inneren Emigration. Mit seiner 1937 erschienenen, historisch getarnten Studie "Bokelson. Geschichte eines Massenwahns" über das Täuferreich im Münster des 16. Jahrhunderts, griff er den Nationalsozialismus indirekt an. Doch die Zensur erkannte die verkleidete Kritik des Buches nicht, es wurde auch nicht verboten, sondern in der NS-Presse sogar meist wohlwollend besprochen. 1944 wurde er nach einer Denunziation dennoch verhaftet. Als das Gefängnis in dem er saß ausgebombt wurde, kam er ins KZ Dachau, wo er unter Sonderbewachung stand, das bedeutete auf "Abruf zu erschießen". Er starb im Februar 1945 in Dachau, wobei die Umstände seines Todes unklar sind, entweder an Typhus oder durch Genickschuss. Der ebenfalls dort inhaftierte niederländische Autor und Antifaschist Nico Rost will ihm aber, laut Aussage in seinem Tagebuch "Goethe in Dachau", dort noch am 15. April begegnet sein. Sein 1936 begonnenes "Tagebuch eines Verzweifelnden", erstmals 1947 in kleiner Auflage erschienen, gilt heute als wichtiges zeitgenössisches Dokument gegen die Nazibarbarei.
